Look out DDR: LightSpace technology can bring other types of foot-controlled games to the arcade

For years Dance Dance Revolution (and similar clones) has reigned supreme in the video game world when it comes to foot-controlled video games. Well move over DDR because here comes LightSpace. Lightspace is an interactive LED flooring set that can be used not only for dance clubs but can also be used in the arcade as a coin-op attraction for interactive games including Pong, Bug Smasher and Dodgeball. I have found at least one arcade game distributor that carries the LightSpace tiles (no price is listed however) so apparently this is only beginning to become available to the arcade scene. Taken from the LightSpace Website :

The system is capable of storing and running a potentially limitless variety of games and interactive programs that can be used by any number of participants simultaneously. Lightspace® Play creates an engaging experience that will draw young children, teenagers and adults alike. Lightspace® Play provides significant return on investment by generating the repeat-customer business so critical for arcade and family entertainment center growth and profitability.”

The Lightspace® Play software is housed in a durable game cabinet that is located next to the surface. Game cabinets can be formatted for coin op and/or free play based on your establishment or event. The Play software not only stores and runs a vast array of games, but also provides a simple touch screen interface for players to choose and pay for the games they wish to play. New games can be downloaded quickly and easily to the system enabling operators to keep their Play system up to date and its appeal fresh without the need to purchase new hardware.”

I have seen this system at a trade show and it is off the hook. I played with some of the games and this is clearly the next generation of arcade entertainment. There is a new video on youtube that deomonstrates more of the games. I am in NYC. Does anyone know if there is one around at any of the arcades?

Thanks for the links and comments guys – that 2nd video is great, I think I’ll make another post about it. Anyone know how much a typical setup costs?
