First there was Tokyo Drift, then Need For Speed Carbon and now Sega is throwing it’s hat into the street racing arena with another new racing game called R-Tuned Ultimate Street Racing. There is very little information on the game at the moment other than a teaser site announcing it’s location test in Japan which starts today and goes until the 29th. The game is developed by AM2 and runs on the Lindbergh hardware and it uses a modified RaceTV cabinet. There is a teaser site up for the game that you can visit by clicking below and one site already has had a look at the game where they report that the game employs a save card system and even has drifting in it. I think this makes 12 racers I know of coming to arcades in some form but we’re putting together a master list of arcade releases in the forum and so it might end up being more once we have it all written down.

That game looks to be much fun. Nice graphics too, from what I have seen so far on that review site. Cant wait to see this game in action.

Hmm. While it’s great to hear news of a new racer from AM2 (and believe me, I do look forward to it) it seems that Sega is really pushing it when it comes to putting racing games out at the moment. RaceTV launched earlier in the year, Sega Rally 3 is just coming out, Hummer Extreme has been on test and then we get news of Initial D 5 and R-Tuned tests in just one week! While the games all seem to be aimed at different crowds, I can’t help but wonder if Sega is simply creating competition for itself at this stage.

i would like to remind readers that AM Sega dose not treat Sega Europe (Rally) as part of their main plans.

I still haven’t seen Sega Race TV anywhere. Personally I’d be more interested in that. With the Fast and the Furious, Need for Speed, Initial D and Maximum Tune games all out there already I don’t know that I’m interested in yet another ‘underground’ street racer.

Good point Molloy, I’m not really sure why everyone is pushing the underground street racer so hard at the moment – in the last Replay magazine I saw none of the games were doing that well on the top 10 list. I think Drift was doing OK as the kit but that’s to be expected.

I really, really hope that this is the last racing game announcement for a while. We need unique games that can attract peoples attention not more of the same, play-it-safe types. I’ve had more people consistently play through The Act than any other game at my arcade right now and that says something.

Well in my country it’s obvious why they’re going for this sort of thing. Most arcades are just a part of a large slot machine gambling establishments. Half the customers are 20 to 30 year olds wearing tracksuits and nike airs. Scumbags/chavs love badly modified cars. Maxium Tune 3 is definately one of the most popular games in the arcade I was in last weekend. The NFS games dominate the home racing sector to a crazy extent too.

I’d like to see more unusual games but operators are even more conservative than the publishers. If it’s not lighgun, racing, fighter or sports game then they don’t want to know about it. I’d say the only option now is for developers to try and sneak innovation into existing genres (2Spicy being a case in point) without making the game look too daunting and unconventional.
