Space Paranoids now playable

Shaggy May 6, 2010 7

The arcade game that never was really an arcade game is finally playable, as “Encom” releases Space Paranoids Online. If you are unfamiliar with Space Paranoids then there is another reason to pull out the 1982 cult classic TRON. If you are familiar with it, then it’s been a long time coming to this point although admittedly the game works differently than what we saw in the movie. As a “purist” I would have loved to have seen a spruced up version of this available as a proper arcade machine one could purchase. Still, it’s a cool little game and I’m happy that they did this as part of the viral marketing campaign for TRON Legacy which comes out later this year. They did have this setup at Comic-Con last year, I would still love to find out who has those cabs, unless they were destroyed after the show.

Anyways, here is the link to Space Paranoids Online

Also in some TRON related news, I was sent a link to a Tron Tribute soundtrack featuring 8-bit style music you can download for free by 8-bit Weapons. There is that which is perfect for a game room along with another recent Tron tribute soundtrack done by Shiryu, which can also be downloaded for free.

mmmh… When I go to the Space Paranoids Online page, I only get a “unity web player – install now!” button on a black background. And when I click it, nothing happens…

Was this game already annexed by Dillinger or am I just paranoid?

No, it does require the player. I am using Firefox and with that installed the game plays fine. Not sure about other browsers though.

That or you are right and Dillinger is on to you. 🙂

I tried on Firefox 3.5, SeaMonkey 2.0 and Konqueror 4.3… All I get is a black page in these three browsers.

Now I’m using Ubuntu 64-bit. Maybe it works on Windows only… If it’s the case, shame on them… even Quake Live works on Linux!!!

I’ll try it on a Windows PC the next time I come across one…

It runs great on 64-bit Win7 under Opera 10.5 BUT I don’t seen an invert mouse function, dammit!

Works great under Safari on the Mac. Lots of fun; even moreso than the version put out a few years ago (forget the guys who did that one). And I noticed that they used the same Robotron font as I did in my Dreamcast game…

Too long of a wait until December…

It doesn’t run on Linux because it uses Unity Web Player which only exists on Windows and Mac OS X.

    No luck for me…

Not that I’m not used to this situation but rarely when dealing with web content.
