Happy New Year from Arcade Heroes

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you have a safe and great 2011!

2010 overall was pretty good for the arcade scene – we had dozens of new games make their way to the market; some new locations opened all around the world, although that is tempered in some degree by some high profile closures; new technology began to emerge such as stereoscopic 3D (with and without glasses) and download-only services such as NESICA and we had plenty to talk about as the year went by.

So what will 2011 hold? At the moment I have just put together a list for Arcade Game Releases of 2011 so you can keep track of new releases. You can also click on “New Games Watch” on the right to view that. One question – should we start including videmption games on that list? Asia already has a plentiful list of upcoming titles and 3D games will certainly be making their mark as the year goes by.  Beyond that we can only wait and see but I am hopeful that we will see progress in some of those emerging technologies, better game prices and more choices all coupled with a surge of interest in the arcade scene.

Also don’t forget to vote in out Game of the Year polls if you haven’t already. They will be running throughout most of the month (until the 22nd) giving everyone ample time to pick. Remember there are two polls to vote on with different choices – one for the Asian market and another for US/Europe. At the time of this writing, Darius Burst Another Chronicle holds a comfortable lead over Shining Force Cross Raid and Beatmania IIDX 18 on the Asian poll; for the other poll Terminator Salvation barely leads Let’s Go Island with Deadstorm Pirates trailing slightly behind that.

Also, since we’re on the subject of the New Year, let me share with you something I got from Play Mechanix in a Christmas card:

It’s an official Play Mechanix chocolate bar. This is the first time I’ve ever seen such a thing from an arcade company and it was pretty cool. Thanks PM!

The bar itself wished a Happy New Year as well(unfortunately it was slightly broken before I opened it):
