Sonic returning to arcades with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Arcade?

Newsfeed 983 via The Stinger Report

UPDATE: Yes the game did in fact come to arcades.

Just a couple of days ago, I had a hunch that Sega could possibly celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary with an arcade title (since they used him in a few arcade titles previously) and it turns out that my hunch was correct. The Stinger Report tells us that Sega is currently planning on porting Sonic & Sega Racing All-Stars to arcades this year. All we know about it for the moment is that it is based on the console version (which was released on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS and sold over a million copies collectively) and it will support up to eight linked units. This is the first Sonic-centric video arcade game to be released since Sonic The Fighters in 1996.

Of course until we get an official announcement, we’ll have to file this under rumor. But it’s a very credible one 🙂

It should be interesting to see what differences the arcade version will have over the console editions. I imagine that they will base it more upon the PC version since most of Sega’s arcade hardware at the moment is PC-based but they certainly have an opportunity to add more content to the game if they so choose. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they use the same cabinet design that they used with Sega Racing Classic and GRID. Unfortunately we do not have any pictures or video to go on at the moment but rest assured that as soon as we have something, we’ll be sure to share it.

In the mean time, here is a video of the PC version of the game, to give us an idea of what the arcade version might look like. I have also added the game to our Arcade Releases for 2011 page.

    Good call Arcade Heroes!

Sonic is back in Arcades! YES!!

Sonic had an awesome roll ball arcade game before.

It was called Sonic the Hedghog but a completely diffferent and (better?) version of the games on Genesis.

They’ve been pretty busy on arcade racers over the past year. Last year they had Sega Racing Classic, HUMMER and GRiD. Should be interesting to see how SRAS will stack up.

I somehow knew this was coming as well due to the popularity of Mario kart arcade gp series, but I do hope they add new stuff that’s not in the home console versions like new tracks and racers eg ristar, the ooze, chuck de head, dynamite heady etc. might just be me but I find that arcade games based on homes games prove more popular in arcade strangely like guitar hero, Mario kart, grid, need for speed etc, this will certainly be a hot racer money wise if it proves true the rumor but they should do something that’s not in the home version even Mario kart A GP has different tracks to the home version and having the lock on attack.

If I remember correctly, one of the developers on this game mentioned on GAF that they had lots of DLC planned, but that they never got it released aside from the Death Egg level and the Metal Sonic character.

Perhaps they’ll use the unreleased DLC in the arcade version?

That’s certainly possible. I imagine that if some of that stuff was put together on some level but not released it should be sitting down ready for polishing. We should know soon enough though 😉
