It has been a little while since I had the opportunity to “unbox” an arcade machine, but today the clock gets a reset! That is because I got my hands on a pair of Maximum Tune 5 cabinets by Bandai Namco Amusements.

While the video is a little over 8 minutes long, the whole process took up around 4 hours. That included a bit of non-filmed parts such as cleaning up the mess that was left from the unboxing (which I had to do alone as I lost my helper for a couple of hours) and running to the store to get an extra surge protector since we ran out of plugs. The network setup also had me scratching my head for a little bit as I thought I had everything wired up properly, but had to launch everything in a certain order (the supplied router first, then the terminal). There is still an issue with the bill acceptor in not correctly recognizing inserted bills, but I’ll get that sorted out today.
The Cosmotrons Bonus
As I was busy editing this video last night, I was unable to post about an update to the Arcadeaholics/Cosmotron news. Since that will be unveiled later today at Pinball Expo, I’ll hold off on making a full post about it until then. Shane Gutbrod of Arcadeaholics did post this new tease to social media last night, so it’s worth sharing here. The new project is being done in conjunction with VPCabs, and after thinking about it for a little bit, I am guessing that this is a single or two-player Cosmotrons cabinet. We’ll find out soon enough!

Congrats, good choice for your arcade! 4 hours is serious work for an installation. Bandai-Namco even run Linux, which is visible at boot screen.
I was surprised in that it took about the same amount of time as the Star Wars Battle Pod, although I had three extra people helping put the battle pod together, while I was alone for a couple of hours on the MT5. Still, the manual wasn’t particularly helpful in describing how to put it together. It was more just look at the parts you’ve got and see what fits.
You made a good choice. I do hope the 6th game in the series comes to the uk unlike maxi tune 5. Is it going to show up at IAAPA this year? I’m curious as to what namco has this year as they’ve not had anything video game wise apart from representing rawthrills and other developers.
I asked Namco about MT6 before buying this, as I didn’t want to show up to IAAPA right after buying this and have that rug pulled out from under me. They seemed to indicate that MT6 isn’t happening any time soon due to how MT5 has been selling (and we still haven’t received the 5DX update yet :/ )
As for everything else they might take to IAAPA, Pac-Man’s Pixel Bash is a sure thing and they’ll have a new variation of Pac-Man Smash air hockey with Batman/Joker theming. My best guess is that they’ll have We Play VR with an upgraded rig and possibly something Mario Kart VR related, but for proper coin-op video, no idea since nothing that Namco Japan is currently working on apart from MT6 would be easily adapted for the West.
