It took a few extra days but here are more pictures of the arcade games found at last week’s GameTime International (GTI) Asia Taipei Expo 2013. For previous coverage of the GTI Asia Taipei event, click here. Keep in mind, while all of these games are certainly destined to stay out East, some will be available worldwide as well (not just through grey imports).

A bulk of the pictures come via David Hiu who has done a lot of work cataloging various trade shows in the past. You can view the album here but where it is loaded with a lot of casino games and other booths that aren’t particularly interesting to look at. So what you find below has been whittled down to the arcade content. A few pictures not from this album will be given the proper credit; there are also some videos from games at the event which were uploaded by Highway Entertainment.

Due to the amount of content, here are tabs to split the content up. Just click on the tab to view the categorized content; click on any images for a full view.

Namco/Sega/UNIS/IGS

InJoy/Sealy/Zeroplus

Unknown

Namco

We already saw a few pictures from their booth, this shows the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 4 setup that was there.

Sega

K.O. Drive – Here are better pictures of this game as seen at GTI. As mentioned in the last GTI post, what was surprising about this is that it’s using the first cabinets the game was seen in back in May 2012. Sega has presented it in an entirely different cabinet at various trade shows since IAAPA in Nov. 2012.

Maimai - We’ve mentioned this game numerous times, still not sure when/if Sega will officially release this in the West.

UNIS

Bike Rally – This game was at IAAPA2012 but not at Amusement Expo 2013. I’m sure it’s still available for any Western arcade. Not often you come across a game that requires you to pedal (aside from Namco’s Prop Cycle). It’s next to something new, a Jumping Fun game that uses a balance board.

UNIS had several other products seen at recent tradeshows which we have covered before.

IGS

It was not part of the album where most of these pictures are found but IGS has a new game that they took to a Chinese trade show in April – there is a chance it was at GTI as well but for some reason wasn’t pictured. It’s called Cube Master Combo Experience, something of a touchscreen music game where you gather colored robots on the screen together. Here’s the English site for the game for anyone curious and also a video of the game from GAGA2013 in action; plus a shot of the cabinet at a location test in Taiwan.

Speed Driver 4 was mentioned in the last GTI post but they also have another racing game called Overtake, perhaps their take on something like Namco’s Dead Heat (more casual than Speed Driver). A question to anyone out there who puts together booths for trade shows – where do you get these metallic girders from? I can imagine doing some stuff on location using those around games. The backlit girders could be useful for more than aesthetics too (attaching webcams to them and such). Some of the designs used by companies like IGS and InJoy are easy on the eyes and would look better in a dark environment.

Speed Rider 2 – IGS’s newest entry into the motorcycle racing game as competition continues to heat up in this genre. Here’s the IGS website for the game.

Funny Table – Released last year, this game also has shown up in Japan. More details on the game here.

MuziBox and Percussion Master 3 – I’ve heard of MuziBox before but not sure how old PM3 is and whether or not this is the first time its been shown.

Click over to Tab 2 for more

InJoy Motion

Their new tank combat game, Allied Tank Attack. As already mentioned, this has a motion seat using their Air technology and also features a driver and a gunner seat (driver uses a yoke controller). Hopefully a video will be along soon so we know how this one plays.

In this photo you will notice something to the left, an interesting development for two of their mounted light-gun games, Top Gunner and Project X-Pher. InJoy has created some theater style cabinets for each game, it’s unknown at the moment if these include motion seats or not but it means an entry into the theater cabinet market for the company.

Launched last year, the Air Series motion cabinets had a complete showing at GTI. According to the company, these new cabinets have allowed InJoy to get their games into hundreds of locations around the world as they offer motion seats at a price point on par with non-motion titles.

Sealy

These pictures were sent our way by Sealy, they had two new games at the show. A racing game by the name of Toy Speed and a videmption game called Naughty Household.

Toy Speed has an interesting element to it – at first I thought it would be just another Mario Kart wannabe but there is a ‘Hero Mode’ where while racing you battle against a large toy by shooting at it with weapons you pick up on the track. Nice to see a twist on something that usually takes the easy route of playing it safe.

Zeroplus

I’m not sure why there are a lot of pictures of this company in the album but they do have a couple of new products they were showing off. Olympic Shooter got a lot of attention in the album and it had two different cabinets. They also had another single pistol game called Rapid Fire Pistol.

Micro Sova

Flying Fortress is a “medal game”, sort of a videmption kind of game that is popular in various territories throughout Asia. This uses a formula typical of turret shooting games but looks a little sharper than some others seen in this category.

Click over to Tab 3 for the rest.

Unknown

This game might be Chinese made but I’m not sure who made it. It was somewhere at the GTI2013 show however. It shouldn’t be too hard to catch the similarities between this and games like Let’s Go Jungle or Deadstorm Pirates. It’s like those but in a helicopter and with AVATAR like environments – but also has spinning barrels to simulate the chainguns.

Single player pistol games are almost never found out West anymore so if they were your choice steak, the Chinese/Taiwanese market is the place to look. My guess is that it has more to do with having a player base that enjoys the “man vs. machine” challenge that has been greatly lost to Western markets.

This is one way to do a 4 player vert-shooter, although the second screen seems redundant in this case. A slightly larger screen in the middle would probably be just fine (especially if it had the mini-boost in screen space of a 16:10 monitor). A 4-player Raiden type shooter could be fun, if the power-up system is similar to Dariusburst (shared power-ups to avoid the problem of power-up hoarding)

I’m pretty sure with is a medal game but Rock Ball surely has to be exciting, if we are judging on names alone

This might be Harpoon Lagoon, a very popular videmption game that ICE recently brought over to North America, but it handles six players instead of four, not sure which manufacturer this is at:

Aside from this, I imagine there might be a few more videos in store, we’ll have to wait and see.

I meant to get to this yesterday but wanted to get permission for one item below for going to wire.

That item is related to the new Hobbit Pinball machine by Jersey Jack Pinball, slated for a release in Summer 2014. until now, that was all we really knew about it, was that it is coming next year as JJP works on getting their first title, Wizard of Oz Pinball out the door. Since they have achieved that goal, it makes it so production time on their other machines will be shortened and they shared the basic design for the lower playfield of the game. I’m sure this could change for the final build but you will notice the idea is to have moving axes among other features. There are targets in the outer ball drop lanes that you may have to bump the machine to get. According to the email that JJP sent out with this image (which I did get permission to share here), it also stated this about the game:

Joe and the Team are going full out on The Hobbit Trilogy. Joe says “This design is going together better than any layout I have ever done. It will include several different elements than my other games. It is a more expansive flowing game with fast shots and multiple ramps. The main mechanism is Smaug which will be very interactive. The game includes subways and a mountain-scape. Aside from WOZ Joe has designed some of the best loved highest earning games including our own TheWizard of Oz, The Simpson’s Pinball Party and South Park. Joe continued; “We are all having a lot of unexpected fun creating this game”

Without further adieu, the partial playfield (click for a full view):

(Next tip thanks to Adam Coate)

Next is something of interest for “indiecades” – I’m not sure if that’s the best name for them to be honest but they probably aren’t getting a wide release anytime soon and they are non-coin. In particular this is a story run by Kotaku about a huge cabinet made for a game called Killer Queen but before we get to that, a message to the author of this story (who appears in the video below)

Evan, buddy, pal. Please do some research on the subject before writing a headline like “Nobody Makes Awesome Arcade Machines Anymore“. Sure what defines “awesome” is arbitrary but I will confidently submit these modern cabinets for review:

This Cabinet is Awesome #1; This Cabinet is Awesome #2; This Cabinet is Awesome #3; This Cabinet is Awesome #4;

That’s just a small sampling of professionally built arcade machines that could be classified as ‘awesome’ and they have more going for them than just big screens too (artwork, LED lighting effects, unique controllers, special molds to adorn the cab, etc.). Presenting arcades as a dead art form doesn’t help the cause of arcades and arcade game makers who still produce this stuff for a living. These games are released to the public at large on a regular basis, no matter what coverage they might get in game media. Why they are overlooked on a regular basis I can’t answer but suffice it to say, you can still find some great arcade cabs out in the wild.

Anyways, back to the story at hand is the unique Killer Queen arcade setup by Josh DeBonis and Nik Mekros. It was designed for an NYU Event called No Quarters and supports 10 players. In one way you could say it carries on the tradition of unique arcade setups on college campuses, Galaxy Game was the first and it ran for about a decade, although it did take quarters to play. The video gets into more detail about Killer Queen with the creators.

Next up is something sent to us by 趙泳泰 on Facebook, a six min videos of the Fast Beat Battle Rider arcade game. This is a game by Taiwainese company Saint Fun, we’ve covered it before and surprisingly it got a bit of attention. I’m still trying to get some more info on what happened at the GTI Asia Taipei trade show last week but not much luck since the last post about it.

Finally, I found out about this on Facebook, not sure how long it’s been the case but apparently if you go to Google Image Search, type Atari breakout and wait for a moment, it launches “Image Breakout” where you get to play Atari’s Breakout game on your browser but with random selected (but clean) Google images. Neat little timewaster although the physics are different than any other Breakout I have played and it’s pretty easy. You can pause the game; I currently have 4404 points and 10 lives still. Curious to see how high I can go. As neat as this is, I have to wonder why current Atari isn’t trying to do things that will make them easy money, like putting Atari Lynx games on the Nintendo 3DS VC and such (I’ll avoid suggesting they jump into the arcade biz at the moment as that probably wouldn’t work out given the path they’ve been on for the past 15 years or so). Seems like that would be more of a no-brainer than this.

Since the “crowdfunding” craze got started, various video games have found glorious success in obtaining funding so they can reach the wide market. Granted, the success of titles like Star Citizen has many dreaming of just a small percentage of that attention but it is certainly easier said than done. We’ve come across a few projects that are arcade-related but none that involved the creation of a full-blown machine before. Enter King of the Ring.

Designed by Nexersys, the King of the Ring first reminds me of a few Konami games, particularly Punch Mania which came out back in 2000. It could also be compared to those boxing machines which are in a few arcades, some of which are starting to integrate video screens for a more exciting presentation. I’ll let their own description detail how the exer-game works:

Nexersys Corporation has created a professional-grade multimedia fitness product that delivers the motivation of a personal trainer, the benefits of a boxing and mixed martial arts high-intensity interval-training workout and the entertainment and feedback available from today’s gaming and computer technology. Nexersys has proven itself to be one of the most innovative and effective products in the fitness space and due to popular demand from current customers, it’s time to take over the gaming and arcade market.

Here is a conceptual rendering of the planned cabinet:

And here is the Kickstarter video pitch:

At the time of this writing, the clock is almost out on the funding period – they have only managed to gain the pledges of a small fraction of their goal of $150,000. Unfortunately we didn’t hear about this until this evening to be able to share the news, with such projects being a Kickstarter rarity it can be too easy to overlook. Perhaps they will try again though or obtain the needed investment another way to make this a reality on the market.

Well it’s weekend time once again, I hope it goes well for all of you out there. Here’s some news stories that are starting to accumulate in the AH inbox so lets begin with…

Cars UK Loctest

The new Disney Cars arcade game by Raw Thrills is due to be released just about any time now, Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report stated that the final build of the software was at the DEAL show in Dubai a few weeks ago. If you are in or near Sheffield, UK and want to get a chance to check out then head over to the Hollywood Bowl that has a pair of cabinets. It’s unknown what software build this is using and whether they are linked although it would make sense for a location test with two units to have them linked. Thanks to Kieran May for the tip!

PureNovelty launches first product – The Pic N Mix

We don’t cover novelty or vending machines really but was asked to take a look at this one. By UK company PureNovelty, their first unit is called the Pic N Mix. As the name implies, it allows the user to pick from various candies and mix them together to their liking. They’ve patented their tech and have set up an agreement in the UK and Ireland with Candyking UK. Again the vending world isn’t our fortei but this looks like a sharp piece with a unique twist to draw some attention. More info on it can be found here.

Namco Earnings Report

Via The Stinger Report(newsfeed 1304), a link to Namco’s latest corporate report card. From the looks of it, things are steady and positive for the company with arcades and amusement still proving to be a solid part of their business. It speaks for itself, you can see it here.

The Great Goat Polo Arcade Hoax

( newsfeed 1305)

Remember the Soviet Museum of Arcade games? It’s a real place that collects arcade games gamers in the West have never heard of. It shows the feeble attempts to capture some of the arcade fever in the USSR during the time when the retro classics we know and love were writing headlines and gobbling quarters in free regions of the world. The games didn’t make it outside of those particular borders and so it left an easy opening for someone to pull a joke. Enter in Ulak-Tartysh, a game that was apparently being touted as a new find from those strange Soviet games as far back as in 2009. It’s something we overlooked completely here, until the jig was up. You can read the confessional here @ Jalopik, where the hoaxster went to the length of creating a cabinet, dirty artwork and a game based upon a sport called Buzkashi (not necessarily the kind of thing on ESPN every other day). It was certainly a convincing piece of work so at least the creator didn’t let the joke reach the mythical status of Polybius.

Yesterday marked the beginning of another amusement/arcade industry trade show, this time the annual GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2013, being held at the Taipei World Trade Center in Taiwan. I’m not sure how much total information we can expect to glean from it but I imagine another post and perhaps it can hit a post trilogy by the time its all said and done. Then again, one initial report said that it was

So far from what I have gathered, it looks to be similar to the GAGA2013 show held in China last month. Naturally Taiwanese manufacturers have a stronger presence here than at other shows so we can expect to hear more along those lines. InJoy Motion is launching a new game to use their Air Series technology which you can find below and Sealy was going to be showing off the Crazy Motor game that was covered in the GAGA2013 post. At the time of this writing only a few pictures and no videos have been obtained from the show, so we’ll skip using tabs for now.

Pictures via Rico Shen of Music Game Fantasia -

Among the pictures received, this is the only new-new product shown so far, Allied Tank Attack by Taiwanese game maker InJoy Motion. It’s hard to determine how it plays exactly just by a single picture although I can see that it uses a yoke control for the left player to drive the tank and the right side uses InJoy’s unique mounted gun. They used this idea of the driver/shooter combo when they first unveiled Project X-Pher but they later scrapped that design in favor of doing a straight light-gun shooter. The seat does use their new Air Series motion tech, which employs various air bladders to move the seat around instead of mechanical arms or hydraulics. I am going to guess that this game is more of an evolution of something like Panzer Elite Action which the company also sells. I’m sure there will be videos of this in action before too long. Also, this will be a worldwide release as InJoy does with all of their games so it will likely be available for Western locations before the end of the year.

Next is a pic from the IGS booth. IGS is also a Taiwanese company that has made waves before and they have been expanding their reach of 3D games. Here is Speed Driver 4, a game made to compete with the likes of Namco’s Maximum Tune 4 series. SD4 was at IAAPA2012 through Wahlap (here is a video I shot of it at the show along with Wahlap’s Storm Racer). No comment on how it compares to Initial D6 or 7 or MaxiTune 4 since I have not played those yet. Also after the pic is the official trailer for the game released last year. The official site for the game (English) can be found here. The game to the right is IGS’ kids game, Hero of Robots.

Namco is there and their booth looks not unlike their booths at US trade shows like IAAPA2012 and Amusement Expo 2013 – excepting the addition of Wangan Mindnight Maximum Tune 4 of course.

I am guessing that this is Wahlap’s booth, judging by another picture below. Sega’s Dream Raider’s next to Wahlap’s Dance Core.

I found the following pictures on Instagram after doing a Twitter search, by user Idben who was at the show.

I’m not sure what the game is up-front here but what I find more interesting in this particular photo is a game behind them, over to the left. That just so happens to be Under Defeat:The Ride which is a sit-down version of Under Defeat.

In case you are wondering, this is apparently designed by Tong Li Animation. How legit it is, I’m not sure. It’s not Under Defeat HD+, just the original game that had been released to arcades several years ago.

And in another shot I find the background games more interesting than the principal point of the photo. That is not Super Bikes 2 but Wahlap’s new Storm Racer MT we spoke of the other day. And right next to that – Sega’s still unreleased K.O. Drive but in the original prototype cabinet that Sega had only shown off a couple of times before going in a completely different direction with it.

That’s all for now, stay tuned for more as there will certainly be more information trickling out of the show soon!

Apologies for the earlier post being taken down on another subject, it was requested of us after the story ran.

Anyways back in the world of upcoming VR developments, Gamespot has an article with a video look at a new concept being worked on in Seattle by the name of VRcade. The video below gives the full rundown of what they intend to do although I was unable to find anything about a launch window for when the facility will be open as they are still in the development phase. The ultimate promise of what they want to do is provide a facility that allows for the immersive play promised by VR many times over – full body motion tracking coupled with the Oculus Rift VR headsets on a large scale. Sounds like just as much an evolution of the laser tag arena as it does an arcade – a “holodeck” albeit lacking the holograms for now.

You can read the Gamespot article here; Visit the official VRcade website here and the promo video below:

While doing research into the Chinese and Taiwanese arcade markets this week I came across some very interesting news about a new game from Sega.

Regular readers of the site here are aware that Sega has a development studio in China that created Sega Golden Gun, K.O. Drive and possibly done work on a few other titles. K.O. Drive hasn’t been released yet but apparently Sega is ready to start testing out their next title and in China first. Given the nature of the license, I doubt it will just stick to that region so chances are we will see it reach the Western world by the end of the year but that is just a guess – nothing has been announced as of yet. This further demonstrates the importance of China as a market for arcade manufacturers. Here’s the location test announcement that unveils the new Transformers: Human Alliance:

According to the scant info about the game so far, it’s a shooting game where humans (presumably the player) fight alongside the Autobots to save the planet. Also it can be presumed that means it’s a light-gun game, which would make this the first licensed light-gun game Sega has done since Rambo. However you never know, there is a small possibility that shooter could mean the STG kind too, which is more popular in that area of the world. It is also the first time I am aware of that the Transformers will have their own specific video arcade game; there was the pinball machine by Stern otherwise.

The testing starts tomorrow and goes until Sunday, I will keep an eye out for any further updates.

Spring is a time for plenty of new things, amusement trade shows included. The Chinese arcade market is moving along quite well and they have several trade shows a year, one of which is the GAGA show (nothing to do with the singer). It can be difficult to obtain some precise information about the games at the show but there is some news to discuss. It may not be completely apparent to us out West but the arcade industry in China has been on fire for some time now. It’s an important enough market that the major names we are familiar with have all established some official presence there, which is also good for stomping out clones. In fact from the information gathered of this trade show so far, finding total rip-offs (like the Plants Vs. Zombies game) has diminished significantly. Graphically a lot of games are improving as well as you will see in the videos.

The important bits have been compiled into tabs for your convenience. The first is Wahlap, a major company there that unveiled three new games. They have been selling some games of theirs out West and they may very well bring these new ones over too. Next is some videos of Japanese and American companies making a presence at the show; the 3rd tab compiling the remaining videos that may or may not be easily identifiable.

WAHLAP

EAST MEETS WEST

The Rest

Some time has passed since we last heard something new coming from Chinese manufacturer Wahlap but since they made their US debut in 2011 I have been keeping an eye on them every now and then. In that time most of what they showed off seemed to be too regionalized for China but that looks to have changed with GAGA2013.

So far the games that Wahlap has showed off for Western buyers has been direct competition to the types of games we tend to see here these days – racing games especially. At both IAAPA2011 and 2012, they brought along some IGS developed games such as Power Truck and Speed Driver, and they also showed off their Ridge Racer type game called Storm Racer. Storm Racer was one game to stand out among other Chinese games we’ve seen and in fact Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report suggested at the time that the game could potentially be the Space Invaders of the Chinese arcade industry, opening doors for them much in the same way SI did for Japanese companies back in the 70s and 80s. It still remains to be seen if that will be the case – it is more difficult for that to occur in part because when SI came along there wasn’t anything like it in the market at large but Storm Racer is one of many racing games to choose from today.

It’s unknown how well SR has sold overseas but either way the game did well enough that Wahlap has a follow-up to it now called Storm Racer G. The cabinet uses a blue color scheme instead of red and it allows for 8 linked units. Not much else is known about this aside from it having 10 race tracks to choose from. So far there do not appear to be any videos from the event showing the game being played.

Just like Namco basing Dead Heat Riders off a car racer of theirs, Wahlap has also decided to make a motorbike version of Storm Racer that they are calling Storm Racer MT. The cabinet is like IGS’ Power Truck and Raw Thrills’ Super Bikes 2 had some perky offspring. Fortunately, we have more than just photos for this one and Wahlap is suggesting that it is “the most anticipated game of the year”.

Then there is something that is called either Iron or Steel Mission. While fairly generic sounding, apparently this game has something to do with helicopters, a vehicle that hasn’t got some real love in arcades for quite some time now. At the same time, the cabinet looks like it has more to do with a tank than a helicopter so it’s hard to say for sure at the moment. Notice that the attract mode in the pic shows English text flashing across the screen so it could be they intend to bring this out West but we will have to wait and see. The description I got out of this was roughly: “The Heli force driving action adventure game “Iron mission” perfectly combines the characteristics of the simulated driving and shooting games“. Which has a hint of Deadstorm Pirates about it but perhaps in a modern setting of blowing stuff up in a helicopter (ot tank) instead. It can handle 4 players via two linked cabinets and is still in development.

There is a good chance that if Wahlap makes an appearance at IAAPA2013 this November that any or all of these games will be there and available in English.

China has some desire for equipment from developers outside their borders albeit in limited quantities. I did find these videos of Sega’s Initial D7, Namco’s Maximum Tune 4 and Raw Thrills’ Winter X Games Snocross however. Now you know why there is a China racetrack in that game…

And among the many strange dance routines that are held for games at these events, this one by Konami got the crowd involved at least for DanceEvolution Arcade.

Here is where the Chinese trade shows get difficult – even when you find a video of a game in action, it can be a challenge to pin down who made the game and if they intend on a wider release for it or not. From some of these examples you will see however, they are certainly improving their graphics over where many Chinese companies were just a few years ago. On occasion they still borrow ideas although the number of blatant rip-off clones (that bootleg a game but give is some unique cabinet) are starting to diminish.

Here’s a fighting game that is unlike any others I’ve seen on the arcade scene for a time. It’s hard to tell if it’s trying to be an arena fighting game (like Super Smash Bros.) or if it’s just a brawler and this is a video of something like a boss battle. It does seem to have a co-op element to it but the cameraman never pulls out to show if there are three people at the control panel or just two. It’s something unique at the very least.

Crazy Motor – What I’ve come to learn about Chinese arcade games so far is that they love racing games as much as anyone else and it will often use ‘Crazy’, ‘Speed’ or ‘Storm’ somewhere in the title. Here’s a motorcycle racer that graphically looks quite good by Arcas called Crazy Motor. I have seen Arcas before when they had Crazy Speed brought over to the West by UNIS. The game loves ramps and explosions, almost like they were driving through a season of the A-Team. It also has a card save system, online play and a leveling up system in place. Official website for the game is here.

Fast Beat Battle Rider – I know who made this one at least, Saint Fun from Taiwan as we have mentioned this game before. Judging by the number of motorcycle games I’m seeing in news about this show, all these motorcycle games have their work cut out for them.

Mysterious Island – it’s AVATAR meets Deadstorm Pirates meets Jurassic Park meets Let’s Go Island. Looks purty although promo trailers can be deceiving in that regard. No idea who made it.

Remember Mozarc? Pshaw, who doesn’t, right? Well in case you happened to forget, here’s a link. Then this video below will feel familiar. Maybe the same company could be behind this but it’s impossible to say with such limited info.

Temple Run meets Thomas The Tank Engine? Unsure who made this but someone did have some Temple Run Arcade’s at the show (in English, probably imported the units by Coastal Amusements) so this could be a cuter version to compete with that.

Good beginning of the week everyone. I have several news items that have accumulated in my inbox here that I meant to tackle over the weekend but I ended up getting sidetracked by being rather busy at the arcade so this all has been pushed back to now. I had meant to publish this in the morning but again, got sidetracked by a very busy day.

I am going to use the tab feature to separate the stories, just click on the tab below to open up the story you are most interested in. Tabs 2-4 are links shared with us by The Stinger Report, covering newsfeeds 1315-1317.

Rock N Roll Verti-Go

Fighter GIFs

Fast DDR Player

Tech Driving Arcade Innovation?

First off something that probably would have fit early last week, a unique new arcade game has been released to the market, one that was covered in the AH Amusement Expo posts, Toccata Gaming International’s Rock N’ Roll Verti-GO. As a refresher, it’s Taito’s Ice Cold Beer gone virtual, with a rock theme instead of a bar one. One of the more appealing aspects of the game for operators will be the price, they were suggesting somewhere in the $3200-$3300 range with ticket dispenser and thermal printer options costing extra. That’s a refreshing change from simple games costing $8000+ and is more in line with where these kinds of games should be. Here’s a video I recorded of the game from AE2013.

Speaking of expos, there is one being held in Taiwan later this week where I’m sure a number of new and interesting games can be found so stay tuned.

Fighting backgrounds are always an important feature for any arcade fighting game to give it some character. If you want to just admire those backgrounds in all of their animated glory, then Reddit user RudeBootie put together this collection of 125 of them for you to enjoy here or in the embedded gallery below. The list is naturally populated with a lot of the SNK games (King of Fighters and such) since they were quite prolific among the 2D fighting games of the 90s.

I’m sure this wouldn’t be news to hardcore Bemani fans but The Stinger sent us this link to a video shared through OhGizmo about a super fast footed DDR player. If anything this is another good example of how the open venues of arcades provide a good way for people to witness such feats (yes I mean that in two ways, haha!)

BONUS: Bacon shared this video link in the comments

Last is a story the Stinger shared about how tech innovation can drive an arcade resurgence. The original article is over at Gamesindustry.biz is entitled “Could tech innovation drive an arcade revival?” and was penned by Rob Fahey. The basic premise is that new technologies, in particular something like the Oculus Rift VR device which we have covered before, may be better suited for use in an arcade facility than at home in certain game settings. The article isn’t without some fallacies, which Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report calls him out on in the comments but at the very least people are starting to think of the out-of-home entertainment possibilities that exist with some technologies.

Cutting edge tech has been a watermark of arcades since they got started so this shouldn’t be a big surprise. It’s just that in misunderstood post-2000 shrinkage we’ve seen more games just play it safe as opposed to going full-on innovative. That isn’t the case for everything released between 2000-10 (Turret Tower in 2004 was a unique, arcade-only kind of setup) but the pace did tick down a few notches. It would be great to see the Oculus Rift device getting some use in arcade simulators and such, as well as another multi directional treadmill that has been getting some press lately. But those aren’t the only places to look for tech innovation.

Take for example the transparent LCDs that have been showing up in arcades already such as Adrenaline Amusements Black Out. That could be used for more than just prize machines although we have not seen anything yet to try something different.

It’s not well-known but there have been monitor manufacturers who have tried to sell 21:9 monitor screens. They have not sold very well, despite the popularity of using two or three screens for office/multitask work. Game design can change to specifically accommodate such hardware and in the arcade industry, what better way to get that sort of thing done? Aside from horizontal shooters, other arcade games that would benefit from seamless widescreen space like this include brawlers/beat ‘em ups, fighters and even more unique vertical oriented games. (Pictured: The Dell UltraSharp U2913WM)

We also have 4k resolutions (higher than 1080p, usually 1600p and even higher) although with use just getting started in arcades for FullHD resolutions that might be tough to swallow. The games have to be designed specifically for these with higher texture resolutions, which drives up costs. Up-conversion can be done but its not reaching the full potential in those instances.

That doesn’t get into possible advances in sound or controls, the multi-directional treadmill is one idea in that regard. We’ve seen another recently with the MocapPods which combine VR and precise motion tracking. I also just recalled a story shared with us on Facebook by Kieran May about the Microsoft IllumiRoom, another item which will probably work even better in an out-of-home setup.

There is more which we could get into but if I do more research this will require me to push it back to Tuesday.

Just received the following information about a new amusement location that is open in London, UK. This is an upgrade to an existing juice bar actually and is still in the “beta testing stage”. Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report shared the photos below and the following information:

LOADING SOHO – the latest venue from the LOADING venue chain that first launched in Cornwall in 2009 – the new Soho London venue, sitting inside the MADD juice bar – and called a “open beta testing” of the concept offers a relaxing venue to socialize and play games. In the early stage of launch the site is still getting the whole environment sorted. The venue along with a smattering of classic console systems had a number of retro table amusement pieces and a few uprights – the final venue will have a lower level with even more machines – looking at private events and game launches, as well as drop in crowd to grow the business. The Stinger Report hopes to visit again for a more in-depth conversation with the venues owner.
