Continuing with our AMOA ‘08 coverage we’ll start with the first video game booth I saw at the show, Betson/Raw Thrills’. They had a spacious booth that was spearheaded by six Nicktoons Nitro games as you’ll see in the video below. I do like the game - it captures the kart racing feel perfectly, it has a subtle sense of humor, the graphics are pretty good (once again I did film the game with my HD camcorder but you wouldn’t know it after it goes through the Youtube filter) and I love the sound. They also had a number of Big Buck cabinets about - two Safari Deluxe cabs (currently scheduled for release on Oct. 1st), a couple of Hunter Pro Online cabs and eight BBSafari Online cabs. The Online upgrade is available now although the first tournament won’t be until November. Also thanks to Ryan at Betson I got some ’schwag’ in the form of Big Buck Safari T-Shirts. I’ll be giving some of these away in some form (probably a competition) at my arcade, they are professionally done though. I had some great conversations with Ryan and he also introduced me to a number of people including Eugene Jarvis! We had a great conversation for a little while where we talked about arcade gaming in general as well as what RT is up to for the future. I look forward to talking with him more in the future. :)

I also talked with the people at Betson about finding a way to add a keypad to my Tokyo Drift’s. Since I got Crusin’ USA cabinets that don’t have that feature, I’d like to find a way to add it to the cabinets so players can keep track of their cars. I don’t have anything figured out yet but I’m going to be looking into it further. They also had a few cabinets with an LCD screen in the cabinet, which looked pretty nice. I noticed more LCD stuff at the show and I am thinking of getting one or two, if I can afford it.

Anyways, enough blabbling, here’s some video! First is Nicktoons Nitro, second is BBS Online.

Back from AMOA ‘08 - some thoughts, impressions and a fire (and my little part in all this) UPDATED

I’m back from AMOA 2008 and it was fun. I got to see many new games that are coming to the States, talk with great people and come away with video and impressions of what’s coming our way. I also got to see more of Las Vegas than last time, it’s only the third time I’ve been there and it was nice to see many things that I’ve heard people talk about like the Bellagio fountain show and more. I also dropped by Sega’s Gameworks and color me green with envy - just one of their Afterburner Climax Super Deluxe games is worth about everything I have in my arcade and they have two of them. ;) They have a lot of great games there, including OutRun 2 SPX, HOTD4 Special (yes the one with 100″ screens), Jurassic Park Special (I never knew that this existed), Too Spicy, Lethal Enforcers 3 and lots more. I also was able to pick up a Tsunami TSUMO cab that’s in OK condition, that should arrive at my arcade next week and hopefully it will give me a boost in people coming in. I also might switch my Marvel VS. Capcom from 1 to 2 and upgrade my Drift games to use a keypad AND upgrade my Safari to online. More on that later.

So let’s get to it! First let me say that arcades are not dead. I say that all the time but I think that video developers came along with a strong showing to further prove that we’re making progress with arcades once again. Secondly, let me explain the part about the fire. Yes there was a fire at the GlobalVR and Trio-Tech booths yesterday. Fortunately no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. My little part - I was playing Need For Speed Carbon along with some other fellows at that moment and I think that everyone playing all the games at the GVR booth AND the Trio-Tech booth at the same time tripped something that started the fire. I’m not entirely sure of how it was hooked up and what happened exactly but the moment our games powered off the fire started. As you can see in the image to the right, it attracted the attention of quite a few people.

Beyond that though here’s a run-down of what I saw and don’t worry, I’ll get to posting videos of them all along with more specifics from each company as time permits. The first booth I came across was Raw Thrills’ and they had Nicktoons Nitro, Big Buck Hunter Pro Online, Big Buck Safari Online, Tokyo Drift and Super Bikes. Next to them was Sega with a much larger booth than they had at ASI and there they had Rambo (in deluxe and standard), Primeval Hunt, a new game called Sega Clay Challenge that uses the Atomiswave board (and we thought that the Atomiswave was dead), Sega Rally 3 in both configurations, a new version of Shoot This! Win This! and the Mini-Rider 2. Stern Pinball was behind them and while that rumor I mentioned a couple of posts ago about a Transformers pinball wasn’t true, they did have something there that surprised me quite a bit - a Spiderman Redemption game. I don’t know if Stern has ever done redemption before (you can hook ticket dispensers up to pinball games though) so this was unexpected. They also had Family Guy, Shrek, Batman and Indiana Jones there.

Moving further into the hall you next come to GlobalVR’s booth where they had four Need For Speed Carbon games linked (two deluxe, two standard, no conversions), four NASCAR deluxe games linked (with the new upgrade), a Blazing Angels, a GlobalVR Classics cab and Paradise Lost inside of a new cabinet design that was previously used with Aliens. TrioTech was next to them but I didn’t see anything new there. South of TrioTech was Andamiro and they had a strong showing with their Pump It Up Pro titles but the biggest surprise of all was they had two Arcana Heart 2 cabinets there! I had no idea that this was coming to the States but it is and soon, I’ll have more details shortly.

Incredible Technologies had a large booth with all of their current IPs on display, including Golden Tee 2009, the new Power Putt, Silver Strike Bowling, and Toss Pro: Bags. All of the games are using their new small footprint cabinet design, which does not include a monitor in the package which reduces the price for the cabinet but you’ll need to come up with an HDTV to mount on the wall or somewhere else. Namco was further south but had a small booth with only two videos, the PacMan/Galaga bartop and Rockin’ Bowl-A-Rama. I didn’t get a chance to talk with them and find out about MT3 DX or if they plan on bringing Nirin over.

And of course I was among the first people to check out Friction by Friction Game Studios. Many thanks to Juan and Jim for showing that to me and being courteous (and patient with all my questions). Having seen the game in person now I’m colored impressed. I certainly looks better live than in screencaps or the compressed video below. The power-up system hadn’t been implemented in the build I saw (which is why you see them seemingly gain power-up weapons at random) but the sound and physics are all there and they showed me a few interesting things with that (including how to make enemies fly towards the screen, which can be fun). There are a lot of things to break as well as to cause to explode and the levels were nice and long. There is also a bit of randomization as to how and what enemies will appear on your screen, determined by who you shoot first which can change the game everytime you play. Hopefully they were able to get what they needed at the show to bring this game to arcades soon so stay tuned for more. It was also flattering to hear that word about Friction was already making the rounds at the show as some people had read about it from the site, so I’m glad to hear how often people in the industry check out the site.

Unfortunately one game I did miss was Get Outta My Face! which was supposed to be at the show but I forgot to contact the author on where I could find him so I didn’t get to see it. If he was there then he wasn’t in a booth but I hope that he was able to show the game to the distributors.

UPDATED: I found out the unfortunate news that someone apparently died of a heart attack at the show on Friday. I don’t know who it was but it’s definently sad news to come over the show.

If you link to this particular post from elsewhere, just head to the main page for the several other AMOA posts that include more details and videos of most of the games I have mentioned above.

Say hello to Friction - a new arcade company and a new game UPDATED

AMOA is here and with it plenty new stuff to talk about. But today we don’t have just any news to talk about - it’s not every day we get to introduce to you a new company that is joining the fray of the arcade industry!

The name to remember - Friction Game Studios. Based in Los Angeles California, they have been working for some time on their first game known as Friction and soon you’ll be able to see it for yourself, either as an operator or a player.

Friction itself is a light-gun title where the gameplay looks to fit between Area 51 and F.E.A.R. (one the game’s designers is a fan of the latter). You play through three huge levels where you fight against hordes of robotic foes and on top of that there is plenty of destruction you can wreak on the game environment, with many breakable objects (ok, buzzword time: it has “destructible environments”)  and several types of weapons for you to use. From the official website about the game, here are all the features:

  • Real-time dynamic lighting using programmable pixel shaders
  • Fully destructible level geometry
  • Ultra-realistic physics and motion captured character animations
  • Over 14 different enemies with varied attack behaviors
  • Variety of player weapons and powerups
  • Unique transforming super bosses with special attacks

As you can see from the video and screencaps below the graphics are pretty good (much better in person and on top of that the game upscales it’s resolution depending on the monitor), as in addition to the physics involved it also uses specular lighting effects. It’s more impressive when you think about the fact that this has been put together by a small team (of I believe two people sorry, I misspoke there - the company has two founders) as opposed to a team with hundreds of people.

(Click on the images to expand them)

The game’s configuration for cabinet or kit form is still TBD, their preference is to go with a full cabinet. No word on pricing or exact specifications on the hardware yet (they are not ready to reveal that at the moment) but it is sufficient to say that this should be something great for operators to add to their arsenal.

Here is a video of the game in action. There are a couple more videos on their website:

We can expect to see more from Friction Game Studios in the future, so stay tuned and we welcome them to the fold!

Before I leave for AMOA…

This is likely to be one of my last posts for the next couple of days as tomorrow morning I will be headed out to AMOA in Las Vegas. I have co-ordinated the trip with a game purchase so I get two birds with one stone - I just hope that the game will be worth it but I am hearing some good things about what to expect at the show. If anyone wants to meet up with me I shouldn’t be too hard to find - I’ll have a green shirt with an arcade on it and I’ll probably be taking pictures, video or just playing games. I do hope that I get to everything though, I will only have an hour or two tomorrow and four hours on Thursday if I’m lucky.

I will have one post after this - a new game announcement along with a new game company! I cannot post it until tomorrow morning but do check in for that!

Now for some rumors about the show: I have heard that SFIV *might* show up there. If so I don’t expect that I’ll have the time to play it as it will probably have a long line and I don’t have the luxury of time. While I was told not to expect much from Raw Thrills’ at the show, Betson (who Raw Thrills’ usually teams up with for these shows) has a very large booth and I heard that something big might be at the show. We’ll see - it would be nice to know what else it is that they are working on so I will know whether to save up for it or not.

I also heard that Stern Pinball might be showing off a new pinball at the show based on the movie Transformers. Apparently some pinball fans are talking about this but I haven’t heard anything until today so it will be interesting to see if that holds up.

I do expect to see Rambo and SR3 at the show since they have those two games on the Sega Amusements USa page. At the very least Sega has a larger booth at AMOA than they did at ASI. I also hope to catch a glimpse of the new title Get Outta My Face! and get a chance to try out NFS Carbon in dedicated form. At least I should be entertained for the short time I’ll be staying, I just wish that the show would stay open beyond 4pm.

I will be getting as much video as I can of the show but it will probably take me a few days to get it all posted and I won’t have internet access while in Vegas. Until then maybe I’ll catch you at the show!

Article: The United States of Street Fighter IV

Here is another take on what is going on with SFIV right now by Jared Rea and for those interested he also has some pictures of what some operators are doing with their kits, which in several cases means taking whatever they have on hand to get the game running without the Vewlix cabinet, even if that means using a 2-player control base that is connected to two HDTVs or even worse just anything they can throw it into (the image above is photoshopped, I should have noticed that before).

You can’t blame them though as SFIV is undoubtedly huge right now but because it commands a very high (let me say, outrageous) price that most operators just can’t afford it creates a difficult situation for us. Had Capcom not dropped the ball on the hardware and made it so that the game requires 1 kit or cabinet per player the situation would be different and more operators could capitalize on the hype that this game is bringing to arcades at the moment - a level of hype that we haven’t seen in a very long time.

One point that Jared makes that I agree with is that SFIV proves to everyone something about arcades that I think a lot of people have a hard time accepting for some reason - that great games that are properly marketed will bring out the masses. I’ve said it before - arcade makers need to take note that SFIV has been marketed like a console game and not like a typical arcade game and look at the difference in the results.

But that’s my rambling, if you want to check out Jared’s article, click here.

Sega’s plans for upcoming shows

Sega has issued a press release detailing some of the things that we can expect to see at their upcoming events, including a few games we have already heard of (or played), Rambo and Sega Rally 3. Rambo has actually got a face lift and according to the photo we received (which is still prototype but likely that this is the final design) it appears that Rambo now sports the guns we saw on Ghost Squad Evolution instead of House of the Dead 4. They also have a pic of the twin non-deluxe version of SR3. While not mentioned in the release, I would not be surprised if they have a few other games at these shows including titles we’ve previously covered such as R-Tuned Racing, Hummer Extreme and House of the Dead EX. All three of those games are supposed to be released by the end of the year so it would be strange for Sega not to show them off in some form and Hummer Extreme has already been tested in the US.

I have heard that Sega will have Rambo and SR3 at AMOA tomorrow, which I will be going too for a short time tomorrow and part of Thursday, I’ll try and get some video of it time permitting. I did notice that Sega’s booth at AMOA is a bit larger than what they had at ASI and in the press release after the jump they say that at ATEI they will have their largest booth ever so it should be interesting to see.

Foosball on Steroids

[Thanks to reader Paul for the tip]

When I was at ASI earlier this year I saw a couple of air hockey tables which had incorporated some new things into the tables like bumpers, sound, different kinds of goals, etc. to make the game more interesting. It was a great idea so why not take them over to foosball? That’s what designer Elia Marinucci did with this ‘Foosball on steroids’ table. In addition to being a foosball table in the traditional sense, the game also incorporates pinball bumpers on the corners and a magnet system that can be activated by a button above each goal on the table to mess around with the ball (which will obviously be made out of metal which AFAIK isn’t standard for foosball). The only problem I see with this table is that all the players are the same color, foosball usually has two colors so you can easily distinguish the teams.

I’m not sure where you can get one of these however, the designer is in Germany but I didn’t find anything about the table from a quick glance on their website.

Namco shows off a new motorcycle game - Nirin

Well over a year ago we revealed that Namco was working on a new motorcycle racing game that looked to be targetted towards Western audiences but was being tested in Japan. Time passed and it looked like the game didn’t do too well and was scrapped but the idea wasn’t thrown away, as Namco is now testing another motorcycle game in Japan called Nirin. This certainly looks like it’s taking aim at F&F SuperBikes but with more of a street racing theme that is popular right now.

We’ll have more information on Nirin as we get it - I do wonder what’s under the hood in terms of hardware because it has been a while since we first found out that they were doing some games using modified Wii hardware and I was expecting to hear something new about that soon .

GlobalVR’s NASCAR arcade gets an update

GlobalVR has announced a new update for their NASCAR racing game, which adds two new tracks to the game, updates team rosters and also introduces the new Car of Tomorrow to the game. They say that it is easy to install and low cost (although an amount isn’t given in the press release) and I am sure that operators will be happy to get this update to build on the five or so tracks that the game had prior. The update will also be at AMOA so I’ll be reporting on it next week in addition to some other new things we’ll see at the show.

BOUND - a co-op touchscreen arcade game

Here is another testament to innovative ideas that can be done better in an arcade format, a game designed by two students for a university project somewhere in Germany I believe (the PC I’m on at the moment is at my arcade so it’s hard to hear the sound on this). The idea has to do with co-operative gameplay where each player has a touchscreen to use. The video will explain it better below but I would love to have one of these in my arcade to build on my desire to offer something different you dont’ get at home. Video posted by youtube user IISiJII

BTW- This isn’t the first student made arcade game we’ve mentioned, there was another back in December called Defend Earth where they built their own hardware from the ground up to run the game.
