Space Invaders has finally gotten around to getting an Xbox Live remake and with it USA Today has done an interview with the original SI creator Tomohiro Nishikado where he discusses how he came up with the idea for the game, the state of video games in general and the arcade experience. I never had known that a prototype of SI had the player shooting people but Taito wasn’t happy with that and had him change it. He heard about Star Wars coming along, figured that space themed stuff was going to become a fad and it went from there. While it’s not terribly long, it’s a good interview so check it out by clikcing on the link below.

King of Fighters 2002 gets it’s own “UM” upgrade

Back in 2007, SNK announced that they would be updating the ever popular King of Fighters ‘98 using more modern technology and they released the game in ‘08 with the name King of Fighters ‘98 Ultimate Match. Now SNK has decided to do the same thing for KOF2002, giving it an “Unlimted Match” upgrade that is scheduled to be released in Japan, sometime very soon. The game runs off of some new hardware that was shown at AOU 2009 known as System Board Y2 by AQ Interactive and the game has been getting a few tests in Japan already so I imagine that it won’t be long before we can import it over.

UK to get it’s first pinball museum on May 23rd – The Pinball Parlour

When I generally think of museums, I don’t always think of them as being terribly exciting (albeit they can be fascinating) but when it comes to museums based upon games, they
can be both fascinating and exciting. I know of a few game based museums around the world and sometimes they include items one would have found in an arcade or bar at one time, both in coin-op video games and pinball. There is a pinball museum in Las Vegas and now the UK is going to get one when The Pinball Parlour opens in Ramsgate on May 23rd. They will have over 30 machines available to play ranging from games made in the 50s all the way up to modern times. There will be some rare items at the location although the news article I’m linking to where this is coming from didn’t say what they have as far as rarities go. Either way if you live in the area be sure to check it out, they even have a small café there and host birthday parties.I hope it works out well for the owners, any venture like this carries with it some risk but in the end hopefully they can make some new fans for pinball once they get a taste for it.
Upcoming equipment spotlight shows by Betson

Betson Enterprises has sent us a couple of press releases detailing a couple of upcoming spotlight events for operators, the first two events will take place back-to-back in Oklahoma on May 12th and the 13th and then next month on June 3rd, they will hold another spotlight show in New Jersey. The shows will spotlight many new products that operators can look forward to buying and it also will feature several seminars that focus on generating more revenue through various methods. According to the lists I don’t see any new arcade titles on there that we haven’t heard about previously although you never know if they will slip a surprise in there or not. Stern’s new NBA pinball will be there along with a lot of redemption product so if you are in the area it’s worth dropping in and checking it out. More details can be found in the press releases after the break.
The home-made Dreamcast Arcade machine

Of consoles in recent memory, the Sega Dreamcast perhaps has the most arcade-to-console ports of any console in the past decade. In part this comes from the fact that Sega used Dreamcast based hardware for many arcade games released towards the end of the 90’s and the beginning of this decade (known as the NAOMI) and so it was pretty easy for any company to modify the game code for the arcade version of a game to run on the DC. IIRC, Sega also released an arcade stick for the DC at one point but there is no better way to milk the arcade experience out of a Dreamcast than to build an arcade cabinet for it (or get a NAOMI cabinet, but that might be cheating). Someone named Tjerk Otten did just that and you can check out the photos of his homemade cabinet by clicking on the link below. I find it to be a pretty sleek design, all I would add personally is some artwork to the cabinet but it still is a cool piece of work.
City eases path for an amusement park to come to North Myrtle Beach, SC

While I never have been anywhere close to Myrtle Beach, this small bit of news discussing how the city council there has eased up on zoning rules so that an amusement park can go into the downtown area there to help revitalize their downtown district. It will probably still be a while before construction begins on the park but if you live in the area it gives you something to look forward to. From a business perspective it also is good to hear stories about cities making it easier for amusement parks or arcades to set up shop in the area as opposed to doing everything in their power to prevent such facilities from even existing.

Move over Wii Sports – here comes Mocap Sports

While it might seem that Konami is a little late to the motion controller party, you also might recall that Konami pioneered the motion controller prior to the release of the Nintendo Wii (which has since taken credit for pioneering motion sensing in the minds of many people, which of course is false anyways in part due to both Konami’s Mocap games and a joystick Microsoft did called the Sidewinder). Those motion controlled arcade games were dubbed “MoCap” by Konami and several Mocap games were released in the earlier part of this decade with some games gaining a fan following (such as with Mocap Boxing). Konami has decided to bring it’s Mocap line back, probably due to the popularity of the Wii and their first game to do this actually makes a reference to Nintendo’s mega-popular pack-in game Wii Sports with the title of this arcade being “Mocap Sports”. At the moment the game is being tested with only one game, baseball and it is a two player game. The controllers have a button and an analog stick on them to enhance the possiblities of what can be done but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to see what that is. I can imagine that this could be quite popular if it has more than baseball on it, in part due to the fact that it will have better graphics than what the Wii can do, real online support and hopefully more games.

More details on Shining Force Cross revealed

Game Watch has revealed some more juicy details on Sega’s new arcade RPG Shining Force Cross and with it my interest in the game is up but at the same time it looks like this is the kind of game that they don’t generally bring out overseas. I hope that they try anyways as it looks pretty cool as you can see from the screenshots. First off, this is another game that runs on Sega’s new Ringedge hardware, with Border Break being the first. The game is very colorful and while it still looks a bit like Gauntlet, it certainly is more advanced than Gauntlet is simply due to the item collection and selection aspect of the game, which is likely to be the sort of thing that would keep Sega from giving the game an international release. The game uses a touch screen system similar to what Sega used for Quest of D although this will not use trading cards like Quest of D did; it also offers players a chat function using the touch screen. Players can also customize the look and the voice of their character with the latter being an interesting aspect of the game I’d like to see in action. The cabinet design looks similar to what they will use for Border Break, and while I do not know of the name for the cabinet that they are using, it certainly appears to be the standard for what Ringedge will use in Japan.Click on the thumbnails below for a better view of the game.

Welcome to the wonderful world of arcade coin buckets

If you have worked at an arcade before or if you own a few cabinets then you have probably come across some interesting coin buckets before. Some are rather irritating as they can be a pain to work with (personally I do not care much for metallic buckets or coin buckets that have grooves along the bottom as coins don’t come out as easily) others are easy to work with which is great when you have to do coin/token pull. On Driph.com, Chris Ainsworth has a picture collection of the many different kinds of coin boxes you can find in old games and I find it to be a great trip down memory lane as well as seeing some boxes that you don’t really see anymore.
Check out the Game Boom

Some arcade cabinets are sturdier than others and I think that this Game Boom takes the cake. Of course it’s not really a game cabinet although I’m sure that with a little extra work it could be hollowed out enough to install a board and monitor. As it is however, it’s a cool piece of art that someone came up with a while back, before we were out looking for arcade related news.
