The Xbox 360 Arcade Station T2 is legit UPDATED with Microsoft’s response

We’ve been looking at the T2 Arcade Station for a while now, it turns an Xbox 360 into a coin-operated device and while there have been questions about it’s legality that had gone unanswered, the company who created the system, Quasimoto Interactive Inc now says that they have obtained authorization from Microsoft Corp. to go ahead with the product. While MS has yet to release a press release about it, my sources are saying that one will be out soon and they are confirming that this is indeed a legitimately licensed product.

It should be interesting to see what kind of effect this will have in arcades, while it’s true that the 360 install base is fairly large there is the social arcade appeal and the fact that players could get a chance to play the full versions of certain games like this before buying them.

UPDATE: I have received an update from Microsoft and here is what they have to say about it: Microsoft does not support or endorse such a product. We suggest you direct any questions to Quasimoto Interactive.

Also on the page for the XBOX Arcade Machine it says at the bottom ” This Web site is not endorsed, sponsored or affiliated with Microsoft, xbox or any other affliates or business partners.”

So are we back at square one again?

Hip Hop Scotch - Namco’s foot controlled redemption game

First there was Taito’s Space Invaders ‘Beat The Attackers’, then someone made an unauthorized foot-controlled Frogger game and now Namco is joining the foot-controlled redemption/video mix with this new title called Hip Hop Scotch. It certainly is an eye-catching game just due to it’s size and shape but I’m not exactly sure how it works with a playfield that size and only three buttons. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this at AMOA, as I also wouldn’t be surprised to see this trend of video-based redemption to continue.

MTV brings us Capcom’s advice on buying SFIV

The MTV game blog (yeah, they haven’t been just about the music for years) has some advice on buying SFIV if you’re in the market for the game, which boils down to ‘wait for the console version’ since Capcom hasn’t been interested in really getting the game out to arcades as they have used it more as a PR piece at events. According to Capcom, there are four things you need to do to get one, which are: 1) Spend a lot of money, 2) Buy in Bulk 3) Live In Japan 4) Wait.

As you probably already know, I don’t see eye-to-eye with Capcom on this - especially if they want to see the game released in the US then why are they the ones putting up all these hurdles? If it’s too expensive then they can lower the price which would make distributors feel better about getting the game as they are the ones who will typically buy in bulk. Distributors do know that demand is high for SFIV but that is damaged by the high price for a game which will have a console version out in less than six months and where the operator is forced to buy two units if they want it as a 2p game(which isn’t mentioned in the MTV article). Conventional wisdom in this industry says that getting your ROI off of this will be extremely difficult under these circumstances established by Capcom. Telling people to live in Japan or continue to wait just shows how serious they aren’t about this - just take a look at my recent coverage of ArcSys looking to get BlazBlue into arcades (which happens to run on the same hardware as SFIV) and when you compare the two, it doesn’t leave you with much respect for how Capcom is handling this.  I’m sure I’m not making any friends at Capcom by constantly pointing these things out but I think it is necessary to do so until they change their attitude about the arcade scene and it’s important that you are informed about it as well.

Gamespot segment about arcades

Here’s something you don’t see everyday but it does relate to what Editor of The Stinger Report has been telling us about the consumer game media - that the appeal of Street Fighter IV has caught a lot of people off guard and even though it still isn’t ‘officially’ available outside of Japan due to Capcom dropping the ball (they just say that things are “difficult outside of Japan” which is code for not trying very hard) many players want to get their hands on the game (my local distributor has been getting a lot of calls about it). Fortunately this is bringing some needed media attention to arcades and even Gamespot has created a short but mostly positive segment about arcades where they visit one particular arcade in California called Starbase-1. That was definently a good choice as they have quite a few new titles, including Need for Speed Carbon. Hopefully the marketing departments of the various arcade developers out there are taking note of this, while a lot of attention might be going to SFIV, I think the more open attitude is a perfect opportunity to point out new games coming from other manufacturers.

The segment on arcade’s is about 20 min into the video, right after the bit on the new NHL game, the show is called ‘On the Spot’. Unfortunately due to the rules about embedding on WordPress I can’t show it here, but here is the link to the video.

A preview of what Sega is showing at next months JAMMA event

The Amusement Machine Show (also known as JAMMA) will soon be here and thanks to The Stinger Report we have a preview of what we can expect to see from Sega at the show. This includes:

Hummer Extreme - a new Hummer Racing game that was tested simultaneously in Japan and in the US a couple of months ago. From the translator: “HUMMER is tough obstacle to a flurry of kick. Courses on a variety of obstacles and boost the destruction MAX will boost gauge is available. Boost to win a challenge to use effectively. HUMMER face of the enclosure is only moving in housing, off-road and refreshingly realistic motion. The two handles of the two alternate, to play some of the DORAIBACHENJISHISUTEMU adopted. Couples and groups enjoying piled play” - which to translate further means that there will be some obstacle courses, a boost gauge, probably a motion based cabinet and it has two steering wheels with ‘alternate play’ much like Outrun 2 SPX had.

Touch Striker - “Shoot, pass, the movement of players, all of the actions that TATCHIPEN to make more intuitive and exciting to realize PUREISUTAIRU! ALL.net dealing with the national players who competed against. Of course, IC card with his team to customize and it is possible to record the record.” Maybe this is a touch screen soccer/football game? We’ll have to wait and see.

Answer X Answer 2 - looks like a ‘game show’ style version of the first quizzing game that can handle more players. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a quiz game like this in the US, I’m not sure when Europe last saw one either but it would be interesting to see such a thing attempted outside of Japan again, just so we can see something a little different from the normal fare.

Star Horse 2: Fourth Ambition - we have few details on this, other than a small picture of the game setup. I am not sure how Star Horse differs from other horse racing games like Derby Owners Club or Horse Riders though.

Harley Davidson - A new motorcycle racing title that sounds like it will feature a motion base and come with a 62″ screen. You might recall that Sega did have a Harley Davidson game that they released back in 1998, this could be an update to that I imagine. We don’t have any pictures of this one for the time being, so hold tight.

And finally one that leaves me scratching my head a little: Highway Star - from the translation: “BGM-flowing game of “HIGHWAY STAR” and the like who have never heard of the 70s have adopted a number of rock songs. Uplifting players”. A move by Sega into the bemani or Guitar Freaks arena? We’ll have to see.

Also on an interesting note, Sega Amusements USA has added both Rambo and Sega Rally 3 to their main site. They have no details on either title yet but I have heard that Rambo will be at AMOA and perhaps this indicates that SR3 will be there as well.

If you live within the distance of an arcade that happens to have a Street Fighter IV arcade setup and you want to go in knowing what you’re doing already, then this guide is for you. Some things might not be clear because of the translator but the page also features videos demonstrating the techniques being discussed (which also happen to be direct captures from the game so they are in high quality).

New Space Invaders pillow to invade your sleep

If there’s any wonder as to why Taito isn’t happy about their trademarked characters being used in unauthorized exhibits, it’s probably because they are currently in full swing with an advertising campaign that uses these characters to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the game. And now that includes pillows!

The pillows are black with white characters to contrast, just like the original game. I honestly don’t remember how much I paid for my last pillow so I don’t know if $30 is a good deal or not in the world of pillows but for something ‘official’ like this it doesn’t seem too bad - if it’s comfortable. Otherwise it might make a nice couch pillow for a game room (if you have a couch there).

Taito not happy about the use of Space Invaders at the Leipzig show, considering legal action

If you follow the consumer game media at all then you probably have heard of the Leipzig Game Show that has been going on in Germany. You also might have heard of the controversial Space Invaders-related exhibit which is being touted as art. Well Taito doesn’t care what it’s called, they are thinking of taking legal action:

TAITO is seriously considering all available options–including legal actions against the infringer and, if necessary, the Games Convention exhibitor involved–in order to end this unauthorized and impermissible misuse of the Space Invaders content and to protect TAITO’s intellectual properties.

Ouch! Of course it doesn’t help that the theme also has to do with the World Trade Center Towers, September 11th, and the whole war on terrorism. I imagine that Taito doesn’t want to be linked to this sort of thing which is probably what caught their attention. Hit the jump for Taito’s full press release.

UPDATE: A response from the artist:

——statement of the artist——————
After three days of a steady downward spiral in public discussion of the
piece, I have just given my agreement to the organizers of the Leipzig
Games Convention to simply turn off the installation Invaders! While I
realize the dangerous precedent of allowing the lowest common
denominator dictate what is and is not a valid form of expression,
unfortunately the current tone has totally obfuscated the original aims
of the piece. While I take full responsibility for the uncomfortable
ambiguity of certain aspects of this work, it was never created to
merely provoke controversy for controversy’s sake, and unfortunately,
this is what the piece has now become. The American response to this
work has been, frankly, immature, and lacking the sophistication and
consideration that other parts of the world have so far shown the work.
Contrary to previous reports, I am an American, and it saddens me that
we as a people remain so profoundly unable to process this event outside
of some obscure, but tacitly understood, criteria of purely anesthetized
artistic representation. Due to these profound misunderstandings, I
simply feel that from an artistic point of view, the work has lost the
ability to have any valuable impact, poetic or otherwise. I have not
been pressured by the Leipziger Messe, nor by the Computerspiele Museum
in this decision — to the contrary, they have offered their support in
defending the right of artists to speak freely, and in whatever context
they may choose.

What gives with the consumer game media (an open letter)

Posted August 22, 2008 by Shaggy

Tags: , , , ,

Again from our friend Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report, an open letter discussing the issue of the not-so-glowing coverage of the arcade industry in conventional game media:

Why dose the consumer game media want to try and shoot-down Street Fighter IV in the arcade?

We have seen first comments that the arcade version was rubbish, then we heard that it was only for Japan, then only for Japan, Taiwan and Australia, and now only limited international release. But most telling, we were told in a hoard of game web sites that the console version of SFIV was to be at the Leipzig Computer Expo, only to suffer amnesia and try and change the subject where Capcom confirmed they had never said that!

I have been asked by a number of arcade fans, what gives with the console game media – why do they have such a downer on amusement, especially when it comes to Street Fighter?

For me, the reason is able to be split into three parts:

1- We were wrong!
A number of journo’s are really pissed that they missed the Street Fighter hype for players to play it on arcade! You can see from the original coverage when the game was broke last year, media coverage moved from ‘denial’, then to ‘dismissal’, and finally to ‘derision’. They were caught wrong footed totally missing the popularity, and the fan sites gained the ground on reader interest – for this the aggression against arcade has grown, and we see the constant digging at the arcade release no matter how popular.

2- Where’s my money!

Always remember that the amusement industry dose not advertise in the consumer game magazines – so it has always been hard to get these guys to treat the market seriously. There has been a major change in marketing by Capcom to address this, taking Journo’s on expensive benders with SFIV coin-op machines present to try and turn the tide, feeling that they need to get everyone onboard to help push the brand – but some writers still sulk, partly due to the next point.

3- We don’t get it!
Like being wrong footed on gamer interest – a number of the current generation of consumer game writers come from a hard nose background that separates them from the core audience for gaming. They send more time at press junkets and game launches, having to rush reviews of 30-hour playtime console titles and have just lost the loving (if they ever had it) for playing. We are also seeing the fan sites leading the way in good coverage of gaming, getting how popular coin-op still is (which hurt the professional writers ego).

Well that’s my blinkered [I am an arcade head] view of why we have seen such a childish attempt to sideline and marline amusement. This whole Leipzig lie about seeing the console version of Street Fighter IV stands as a stark reminder that arcade is still treated as a [dead] black sheep in the gaming industry.

END

I also have found it interesting that in the same week where we start getting reports of arcades in the US getting their hands on the arcade version of SFIV we begin to see a flurry of news on the console versions of the game, which should serve as a reminder to arcade companies how the console version of a title can work to undercut their own game in arcades.
