Konami already testing a sequel/update to uBeat

One game I had hoped to see at ASI was Konami’s uBeat. There had been a US location test but since then we have heard pretty much nothing about the game here. Sadly, we still have not heard anything but as a show of faith in the title overall, Konami is now testing a sequel to the game in Japan, called Jubeat Ripples (in Japan, they put a J in front of it). There are some details of the first location test up at Aries Small Rooms. The cabinet looks the same but they have added some changes to how the game handles certain events and added some songs. The translation of that page is a bit rough though so it’s unclear as to what some of the changes are (such as the default marker, whatever that is). There is another location test tomorrow so we will see if there are any extra details to be had when reports of that test hit the net.

AH friend Kevin Williams is on the road but still is sending us newsfeeds (sorry I missed you at ASI BTW), this time of the strangest crane machine I have seen yet. I will say yet because who really knows what they will think up next. This crane machine is on the erotic side of crane games and thus the pic might be NSFW (?) so click to enlarge but yes that is what you think it is – a crane machine where you grab and win boobs (there is no way to not make that sound weird or perverted). No need to take a wild guess as to where you’ll find this crane game but in case you’re seriously unsure, it starts with a J.

Wow

Not for kids...

Rumor: Terminator Salvation coming to arcades later this year

tsalvHey, hey, it’s rumor time again, this time it’s about another Bale-Out! Just kidding, although the rumored game will have something to do Christian Bale in a sense. As you might know, one big movie that many people are looking forward to this year is the new Terminator movie, known as Terminator Salvation, set to be released on May 21st 2009. And rumor has it, according to an unnamed but reliable source of ours that a major arcade studio is looking to release a light-gun title based upon the new movie, later this year. Which studio that is they did not say but our source did state that the game currently looks “astounding” and should turn some heads when it comes out. I did try to find out about new releases from the various manufacturers at ASI but they were all silent on that point so I can only guess as to who might be working on such a title (which it could be any of them).   As soon as we find out more in an official sense we’ll be sure to pass it along but until then, what do you think if this holds true?

Personally I have not seen much on this movie yet, admittedly I need to catch up on the trailers although from what I have seen and heard, it sounds like it should be a good one and Terminator always seems to be the perfect fit for a light-gun arcade title, as it was in 1991 with Midway’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Stay tuned, we’ll be trying to find out more.

Little update: I have noticed that some commentors on sites linking to this post are wondering where they can find an arcade near them. Just a friendly reminder that you can check out the websites Arcade Finder and Arcade Fly to help you locate an arcade where you can then go and bug them about getting new arcade titles like Terminator or anything else that is coming along. :)

Oh and as for an update on the rumored title this post mentions, I have also been told that the game will not use mounted guns like in the T2 arcade title, but will use free movement guns connected to the cabinet, like we see with most arcade light-gun games. Of course who knows if they change their mind after testing, although personally I like having free guns more than mounted ones.

I also have added a little note to our Brazilian friends who are checking out this post in droves after the break below.

New from Incredible Technologies – Target Toss Pro: Lawn Darts

While Incredible Technologies did not have an official booth at ASI, there were a couple of their games on hand being shown through Fun Company, who we have talked about recently with their new designs for those IT pedestal cabinets. Even though they were not there in full force, they do have a new game coming soon, building on one title that they have in their library, Target Toss Pro. This new one is called Lawn Darts and it takes the concept used with Bages but changes it up for tossing darts in different scenari. IT calls it “outrageous and irreverent” as it not only is based upon a game that was apparently banned in the US and Canada about 21 years ago and it even includes an option called “Raw Talk” where the game can spout a number of “adult-oriented epithets” to help recreate the experience of lawn darts back int he day. That is optional for operators to set as active as well as for players to choose. Here’s a video of the game in action, you can go to the page with the video to see it in HD as well. Lawn Darts will be available on March 17th, and we have added it to our Arcade Releases for 2009 page as well.

On top of all this,  IT also indicated that they are spending millions of dollars on “developing new games that will attract and appeal to a new generation of bar-goers.”  and this is just the beginning of that effort. We look forward to seeing what else IT has in the pipeline and I imagine it won’t be long before we find out what else it is that they are working on.

For more info on TTP: Lawn Darts, hit the post break below for the full press release or discuss it on the forums.

ASI 2009: Some thoughts before the videos

Well I’m back from Vegas and I’m ready to show off videos of what I saw there! The only problem is that so far my internet connection has not been co-operating with me and I’ve been getting errors when I try and upload videos, whether it’s for a site like this or Youtube. I will keep trying but I will probably have to find a different connection to use to get all of this stuff online.

As for the show itself, I had a lot of fun, it was great talking to some of you I have met before as well as talk to some who I hadn’t. I do think that the show was better this year than it was last time around – perhaps it’s because there were more games there and the games overall are improved so it wasn’t hard to top ‘08. It also was nice for the pizza expo to be taking place right next to the show, I just wish I had known that I could visit it on the first day we were there.

NOTE: It is looking like I will not be able to get any videos posted until tomorrow (Sunday March 15th) afternoon. Sorry about the delay, I would love to get everything up already!

NAMCO

Namco’s booth was right in front of the show entrance and they were eagerly showing off their two new titles, Razing Storm and Nirin. They had two RS cabs and two linked Nirin cabs on hand.  Both games are impressive – they look great and they were both fun. They also were quite loud, up to the point where I felt like I was leaving a concert after walking away. I think that I missed getting a video on Nirin which is too bad as it’s a great looking game and the monitor was much larger than I thought it would be – I think they may have changed it from previous versions. Nirin also uses System ES1 for the hardware, which I would like to find out more about. Razing Storm is a worthy successor to games like Crisis Zone and Time Crisis. The guns were larger than I expected but comfortable and the graphics were naturally awesome (although I don’t care for DLP monitors personally, I think they make stuff look slightly fuzzy) and they blend perfectly with the physics that the game uses. There were constantly crowds checking out Razing Storm although I was able to jump on to this and play several times. Namco also had MaxiTune 3 there and they showed off some new redemption product and a new crane where you would cut a thread to win a prize.

RAW THRILLS/BETSON

Over to the right of Namco was Raw Thrills, with a large booth showcasing their two big games, H2Overdrive and Guitar Hero. Both games attracted an awful lot of attention and it helped that they had so many GH cabinets on hand. Unfortunately there were only two H2Overdrive cabinets there so on occasion it was tough to get a spot but I was able to play for a bit and I came away impressed. While this game looked great in the pics and videos that were online, it’s much better in person if you can believe that. The version at the show was not final, they still had to add a few things to finish it up but it was fully playable and I was able to level a boat up to level 18 or so. The sound on this was also cranked up quite a bit and it will probably carry a price point of around $7500. Guitar Hero was pretty cool as expected, I had never played the game before the show (yes that’s lame, but I have played Rock Band which is essentially the same thing) and came away happy with the experience. It looks good and where it doesn’t give players a “fail” if they royally screw up, it will probably appeal to players afraid of such a thing. I also saw DDR:X at their booth although I didn’t play it, the game itself looking like it would be fun to play but I didn’t give it a whirl. The most surprising thing about DDR:X was the price tag – it’s actually below $10k (it is somewhere in the upper $9000 range) which is a nice change for a DDR title. There also was a new game there by Chicago Coin called Putt Challenge which combines putting a real golf ball with a video game. This sort of thing could go well with people who have a bit of money and like those putt practicing games in the office, but this is much better.

BTW- I did find out something about American Idol – it appears as though the game was canceled due to some issues, I think with licensing. That would explain why it’s been hard to find – it was never actually released!

STERN

24 was proudly on display at the booth and I got a video of it, even though I wasn’t terribly good at the game. Stern also had a tournament running on Batman, with some players earning some pretty crazy scores.

SEGA

Further up from the Betson booth was Sega – with a much larger and thus better presence this year than last. They had R-Tuned Racing and Harley Davidson there to compliment titles like Rambo, Sega Rally 3 and Bass Fishing Challenge. They also had Brick People there and a new video redemption game called When Pigs Fly, which was an amusing little game where you shoot a pig up into the sky to hit a UFO along with other targets for a ticket payout.  R-Tuned Racing is certainly the best looking Lindbergh game I have seen yet and the game itself is fun although I wasn’t really sure about the unlimited boost feature – that makes it feel a little cheap when racing. Still, drifting was easy and against another player it can be fun, it’s just too bad they didn’t have more R-Tuned cabinets there to show off. They also had the deluxe Harley Davidson game there to enjoy and it has been such a long time since I played the original HD game that I can’t tell you how they compare but I thought it was cool that they had a number of 70’s rock songs to choose from each round and the motorcycle controller is really cool to use thanks to the feedback they built into the bike. I would have prefered to see an LCD monitor instead of a DLP but that’s my personal preference (as I mentioned above) and it still looks just fine. They probably used DLP to get deeper color from the game and it is quite colorful as you will see later when I can manage to get the video online.I did ask about Ringedge games coming to the States but at the moment I don’t have anything to pass along.

GLOBAL VR

A little ways to the left of Sega was Global VR, showcasing their newest title Justice League. Like TwistedSupreme and HeavyElectricity mentioned in their ATEI coverage, this game looks better in person than in still screenshots and it’s a fun game to boot thanks to the several levels and characters you can pick from. It also has a few secrets throughout the levels although I wasn’t lucky enough to uncover any. As TS and HE mentioned the game could use a greater variety of enemies and I think it would be cool to have more file0169obstacles to face in the levels I played but who knows if we’ll see an update in the future to fix these minor problems.  I love brawlers so it’s great to see this in arcades again and at the price point they are selling this at, I imagine that a lot of operators will be tempted to pick it up. They also were demonstrating a conversion kit of the game in a Dynamo cabinet and it looked great even on that – kits will go for around $2400 so it should be even more tempting to buy. Beyond that, they had deluxe versions of titles like NASCAR and Need For Speed there, along with a Blazing Angels cabinet to round out the mix.

PENTAVISION

These guys were at the show demonstrating their bemani-killer DJ Max Technicka. I only got to play through one song but I was impressed – it’s a fun game with a ton of features including online stuff and the cabinet is quite attractive. They did say that we can expect to see more from Pentavision in the US in the future, so I look forward to seeing what they will bring to us and honestly I think that this is a great start.

ICE

While the main focus of the ICE booth was redemption product, they also had the Game Gate VU (the new cabinet that allows you to legally install an Xbox 360 on location) and a ball throwing video game there (the name escapes me right now). The Game Gate is pretty cool but I can’t say that I care for the price tag – asking $6000-$7000 seems to be a bit steep for this even though it’s using licensed games but we’ll have to wait and see how people take to it.  The ball throwing game was fun, I have seen these before and with all of the mini-games it has a bit of replay value. It did have an occasional problem with recognizing a ball hit but otherwise it seemed to work fine.

Coastal Amusements

I got a chance to play the new Sea Wolf (and I got some video of it in action) and the new version is definently a much better game, thanks to the extra depth they gave to it. They also added some voice to it and they had a really good price on it at the show for less than $4000. More coming with the video later.

I think that this pretty much finishes it for now, as I said I will be getting a number of videos posted soon, but I need my connection to co-operate with me first. I’ve also got some more pictures to upload but they are on a camera that isn’t with me at the moment but I will try and get that taken care of tomorrow or Sunday. So stay tuned for more!

The 2009 Texas Pinball Festival

(Thanks to Jonathan Leung for the tip)

We’ve got another coin-op machine event to mention here, this time revolving around pinball. The Texas Pinball Festival will take place on March 13th-15th in Grapevine, TX. The event sounds like it will offer quite a bit of fun for players to experience, with about 195 pinball machines to experience (all on on freeplay) , tournaments, door prizes, a raffle for a full-sized pinball game and vendors from the area who will be selling various parts and supplies for your gameroom or machine.  They have over 15,000 sq. ft. set aside for the whole thing so I imagine that it will be quite a fun event to go to and it would be something great to take the kids to as well (give them a taste of pinball in case they haven’t really played it before). In case you want to find out more, here’s a video about the event and the website link is below.

“Get Outta My Face!” indie arcade game making the rounds prior to release +a little arcade industry rant

Despite all of the new coin-op arcade releases that have been coming at us lately, we haven’t forgotten about the indie game that is out there known as Get Outta My Face by Snow Runner Productions. While the game has not yet been released to the public at this time, Snow Runner tells us that distribution for the game in the US (and possibly even in the UK) is being worked on and we should expect to know more on that front soon. If you want to check out the game prior to release, there are a couple of events that it has either appeared at or it will appear at very soon where the game will be available to play arcade_cab_001for the public.

First off the game was on display at Ctrl+Alt+Del’s 4th annual Digital Overload event this past weekend. As Snow Runner tells us, “Over 700 people attended the event and the game was played constantly throughout the weekend. [Overall] reaction to the game was great!”

Next up the game will be at the ScreenBurn Arcade at SWSX Interactive which takes place in Austin, TX March 13th-15th. The Screenburn Arcade is the only part of the SXSW show which is free for the public to enter so if you live in the arcade and you would like to check out this original arcade title, then here is your chance to do so before it’s general release.

Snow Runner *might* be at ASI and if so, I will be sure to pass along anything I can from that event on the game as well.If you missed previous AH coverage on Get Outta My Face, you can catch up by clicking here, here and here.

I do have to say that it is quite refreshing to see this sort of exposure being given to any arcade game outside of general arcade trade circles and it makes me wonder – if an independent developer is getting his title into events like those mentioned above, why on earth are other arcade companies not doing the same thing? This subject has been on my mind lately and I think that this is one area where we need to make a shift in thinking. The only shows where we are seeing new coin-op games at are primarily intended for people within our trade – not so much the players. But I fully believe that if a greater effort were made to market coin-op games to players and not just operators/distributors, then naturally operators/distributors will find out plenty on the games and be more comfortable in purchasing such games because players will be excited about them and coming to those operators asking about them. Trust me, as an operator myself I would feel far more comfortable plunking down several thousand dollars for a new game if I had people coming into my store constantly bringing that game up, inquiring if we were going to get it than I would just hearing that the game did pretty well on location test for a few weekends at some far off place I had never heard of. I’m not suggesting that we ditch trade shows but I am suggesting that if an indie arcade developer can drum up interest in their game by putting it in the same place as other common console video games, then so can larger developers who have a lot more income at their disposal to make it to such events. Don’t underestimate the power that players can bring to the table in this industry – we have been ignoring it for far too long and it has held us back from real growth and prosperity.

EDIT: just a quick addendum to this. As I was thinking about this last night I wanted to bring up that I know that player outreach has not been completely ignored by everyone in the industry and we certainly have seen improvements in this area over the past year or two, especially when it comes to online arcade gaming. Kudos to those who have been doing what they can already to get players interested in the games they make more so than trying to interest just operators/distributors.

Another great event which will have a prominent display of arcade gaming goodness is fast approaching, where this time it is the famous Midwest Gaming Classic. In addition to tons of classic gaming consoles and PCs (about 200 will be at the show) they also will have over 125 arcade and pinball machines set on free play for the public. There is more to it beyond all that which you can read about in the press release after the break but this is one event I’d love to visit one day where I love classic gaming, whether it’s on arcades or consoles.

Midwest Gaming Classic will take place on the 21st & 22nd of this month and it’s only $15 for admission on Sat. and $10 on Sunday. Kids under 12 get in free too, which is a really nice deal.

IGS releases Speed Driver 2 and Speed Rider in Asian markets

Taiwanese arcade game maker IGS has some new games to show off and this time we’ve got another motorcycle racing game and a car racing game, named Speed Rider and Speed Driver 2, respectively. Speed Rider looks to carry plenty of inspiration from Super Bikes and Speed Driver f94seems like an Initial D clone, although I am not 100% sure how similar they might be. Either way you can check out the videos by clicking on the links below. I noticed that they sped up the frame rate of the video on Speed Driver 2 to make it look like it was going faster than it really does.  I did attempt to upload the videos directly to the site but unfortunately I was met with an IO error both times, which might be due to the connection I am currently using.

[Speed Rider video link]

[Speed Driver 2 video link]

Also on another IGS note, they are reporting once again that revenues are up thanks to their coin-op division, this time it’s up 66%. I don’t knwo how many quarters this makes in a row that they have been posting gains but it’s proof once again that there’s life to coin-op video games.
