Ground Kontrol’s 8-bit Calavera art show

arcadehero November 4, 2010 1

When you run an arcade, sometimes it helps to hold events to help bring new customers in or some old customers back and Ground Kontrol in Oregon, USA is doing something along those lines with their 8-bit Calavera Art Show, which opens today and runs through the rest of the month. As it is an art show being held at an arcade, it does have gaming as a part of the theme but here it is explained best:

“It’s a Dia De Los Muertos/Day of the Dead themed art show with 40 Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges hand-painted with Day of the Dead themes. All 40 cartridges will be displayed in the shape of a giant pixel skull!”

Come to think of it, all gaming-related art shows should happen at an arcade, which are already art galleries of a sort based solely upon the cabinets you find inside.

More details can be found in the press release after the break.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
8-Bit Calavera: A Pixelated Celebration Of The Dead

PORTLAND, ORE. – The Autumn Society (a world-wide collective of artists) and Ground Kontrol
Classic Arcade are proud to present 8-Bit Calavera, an art installation featuring 40 Nintendo
Entertainment System cartridges hand-painted with “Day of the Dead” themes by 40 artists, assembled
in the shape of a pixel skull.

The Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (or “Day of the Dead”) is typically celebrated with toys,
masks, sugar skulls and art inspired by and in honor of the dead. The Spanish word for skull, calavera,
is also used to describe any art representing a skull. The holiday is celebrated by many in the U.S., and
the art has evolved with the passing of generations. In that spirit, we are excited to present one of the
most unique Day of the Dead art shows ever seen!

8-Bit Calavera will debut this First Thursday, November 4, at 7pm. It will be on display on Ground
Kontrol’s stage through the month of November. The paintings will also be individually priced for sale.
Our tremendous thanks to The Autumn Society and its artists for making this happen!
