As the cabinets burn (in China)

Newsfeed 1245 via The Stinger Report

China is no stranger to rip-offs and bootlegs but as their arcade sector has taken off, apparently there are some machines that the government says is a no-no, whatever it is that they happen to classify as a gambling machine. I’m not sure what the guidelines are over there to fit into such a classification but it seems to occasionally include something inside of a typical Japanese candy rip-off cabinet. Why the PCB couldn’t be pulled out and smashed if it’s a threat to the state instead of demolishing perfectly good arcade cabinets that could easily be re-purposed, I have no idea. It probably would make for less impressive optics on the photoshoot.  Not all of the burned machines included such candy cab bootlegs, some did look pretty funky and were possibly terrible either way. No sight of those Plants Vs. Zombies bootlegs so I guess those are still ok. Anyhow, head over to Wired.co.uk for the full gallery.

A rather sad thing to see whole sets destroyed, but it doesn’t surprise me as this is afterall…. China.
