New Indie Arcade Game Coming Soon: Flytrap

arcadehero June 14, 2014 17

It was mentioned on the blog previously (I can’t remember exactly where) that 2014 was shaping up to be a good year for independent/small developments in the arcade sector. Today, Coate Games has shared some details with us on a unique new arcade game they are prepping for launch sometime this year.

Called Flytrap, this game originally made an appearance on the Xbox 360 Indie program but now it will be around just for arcades. The premise is certainly different – the creator of the game, Adam Coate describes it this way: ““Flytrap is 2 player Galaga type game in which the player controls a venus flytrap who wields a high pressure water cannon. The player shoots enemies (who spawn along the horizon and move towards the player) to stun them, and then finishes them off by inhaling them Kirby-style. Eat enemies to earn extra lives, and defend them from enemies.” Instead of a traditional joystick, this uses a spinner/knob and supports two players.

The game recently made it’s debut appearance at the Denver Comic Con 2014 event; it had been on test in at a Colorado  arcade venue or two previously. Here is the Comic Con appearance:

And here is some direct footage of the game:

And here are some pictures of the final production cabinet. A price wasn’t given yet nor distribution details but once available I will be sure to share here.

I tried the Xbox Indie version of this game and didn’t play for more than 5 minutes because it was so bad. I’m shocked this is being made into a cabinet.

Somebody watch that gameplay video and honestly tell me this looks fun.

Thanks for you using your real name Exidy. You are such a tool.

I’m not Exidy, but it’s clear you have some vendetta against him. :\

Ah sorry, based on your unnecessary vitriol and name I assumed it was him. Please direct your hatred at someone else if you don’t mind. I know this is the internet and you feel obligated to act in a way you would never have the courage to do in real life, but I do not need it directed at me.

Adam, your automatic condescension isn’t needed either. If I were to meet you in real life, I would be honest and tell you straight up that I did not think this game was fun at all. Since you seem actively interested in my comments, I’ll expand a bit more. I wasn’t out to attack you, just sharing my total shock about this being made into an arcade cabinet, as it was one of the few Xbox Indie games I’ve tried and disliked. The character movement animations were weird, watching them waddle back and forth didn’t seem fluid or realistic. It’s weird that a flytrap even has legs. The sonic waves they shoot out didn’t make any sense to me. I also remember having trouble with the responsiveness of the controls. The game’s idea was very simple and derivative of arcade games from the 80s without any change in gameplay. I’ve played your game before, with many different names. You seem to be taking my dislike personally. I don’t hate you, and have never interacted with you previously. I apologize if you think I’m personally attacking you or out to get you somehow.

Upon doing a little more research and seeing comments you’ve made on other sites, I see this appears to be your normal response to negative feedback.

You have no idea how much work goes into even a simple game like this. And for you to actively try and convince other people not to like something that has had so much work put into it is just hateful and disrespectful. You’re correct that I do not roll over to peoples’ internet toxicity, and I am proud of that. The main problem with the XBLIG version is that there was no leaderboard support (thanks Microsoft), so I took that as a challenge to make an arcade style game without scoring. It turned out OK but it was much better once I added a screen position and combo based scoring system, which is in the arcade version. Even if the game does not appeal to you, it appeals to the mass market. Women and children especially like the game, and that is who I am targeting, not some hardcore gamer who already has tons of gaming consoles and PC games. So again, please in the future consider a little perspective before flaming someone’s blood, sweat and tears.

Adam, are you working on a mobile app? The mass market /= arcade goers. Women and children are most often playing games on their phones and tablets, not in arcades.

        • Adam Coate June 16, 2014 at 6:41 pm -

It’s aimed more at movie theaters, bowling alleys, family fun centers, bars, etc than arcades specifically, although I’d like to get it into the barcades that are sprouting up as well. The mobile app stores are over-saturated and you have to start out with $100,000+ in advertising money just to get anywhere. Big publishers are literally spending $2+ just to get a player to try out their free game. That is not a healthy ecosystem. I see the coin-op industry as an opportunity since it is currently underserved by manufacturers; people want to play something other than lightgun games and racers. People actually love arcade games, especially kids, and that’s a good sign considering they have no nostalgia for them yet. I think that new content just hasn’t been made for them in that space for a very long time.

In a post- Flappy Bird universe I don’t even understand why anyone would bother with “this game sux” or see that as a verdict on anyone’s work, as clearly it doesn’t matter. The market will do whatever it’s going to do. If I’m going to review something according to *my* tastes, I at least do the person the respect of saying something specific, and likely expounding at length. “This sux” is just the work of Haterz. And as I don’t know you from Jack, how do I know your taste isn’t absolutely abysmal IMO? Hence the need to justify one’s opinion with specifics. I might be able to process your specifics, rather than bowing to your mighty Claim To Authority [TM].

I really hate it when people use my name to post. Have some courage and use your actual name if you want to flame me, coward.

I don’t understand why you think the above post is a flame. It merely serves to show users what a deluded lunatic you are.

BTW forget about the arcade market, no distributor in their right mind will pick you up given your attitude. They’ll do an internet search and out will come the CRAZY in regards to Adam Coate. That and your game just isn’t very good, and even if it has good earnings (doubtful), what distributor would want to put up with your attitude?

You also know nothing about the mobile space. An indie developer I know makes high six figures developing his own apps and he does not have a marketing budget. He does however have very good games, which of course you do not.

Perhaps you should stop making excuses for yourself and finally own up to the fact that the market DOES NOT WANT your game.

I’m pretty sure the person who posts under someone else’s name to slander them is the one who is deluded and insane.

Hey at least you have a T-Shirt to forever mark your delusions.

On another note, you don’t seem to bright when using the internet. Disaster follows you anytime you post. Maybe it would be smarter for you to not post anything. However, I understand with an ego as big as yours it is hard to control yourself.

I wish you the best of luck finding a distributor for your game. Seeing the catastrophe you have caused on arcade heroes (a site that many distributors read BTW) you have made it easier for no one to carry your game.

Then again I am sure you are arrogant enough to think you can manufacture and ship the cabinets yourself….

        • Adam Coate June 17, 2014 at 3:11 pm -

And I wish you luck in your quest to pull down others who actually do something with their lives. I hope that it fills the void in your soul left by not actually doing anything positive with your life. If projecting your self-hatred onto me makes you happy even for just a second, then it will have been worth it.

Search “kiwasabe” on any forum and you will find Adam shooting his mouth off while he hides behind his stage name.
