Newsbytes: Locations Adding Arcade Gamerooms; Dariusburst Love; Name That Game #52b

I don’t know about you but this year is zipping by for me. Have a happy August as those things go. Which for kids in my area means school will be back in session by the end of the month and when school starts, the arcade slows down a bit.

Luxury Condos Adding Gamerooms – Thanks to Michael Louie for sharing this article at the Wall street Journal that looks into luxury condos adding arcade gamerooms to their buildings as a way to attract buyers. I’ve said before that any place where there is a commercial opportunity with something like a waiting room, the potential is there with the right game to use arcade games. It sounds like most are using classic games for the most part, tapping into any nostalgia that the older buyers might have. It would be interesting to see how this will work out, assuming that maintenance is continued on the games and that they are occasionally swapped out for different or new titles.

Arcade games added to a new public library in Aarhus, Denmark – Speaking of that, here is something unexpected for finding arcade games out in the wild – finding them at a library. Going by the name of Dokk1, they opened up in the city of Aarhus, Denmark this past  June. A local arcade association there has placed a few games in library patrons to enjoy, which includes a pair of New Astro City candy cabs and a Danish made JAMMA cabinet. According to this post at Arcade Otaku, they are currently operating Puzzle Bobble, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder  and Progear No Arashi – all at very low volume levels so as to not disturb the serenity one expects from a library. Still, it looks like they are making it work so if you happen to visit the location, you can seek out the arcade learning experience 😉

Dariusburst Another Chronicle Gets Some Love From Eurogamer – Shaun Holley of the Tenpence Arcade Podcast shared this article by Eurogamer with me a few weeks ago but for some reason I completely spaced out on sharing it on the site. When asked what my favorite arcade game is at the moment, I usually state Dariusburst: Another Chronicle because it is just so good. It has everything an old fogey gamer like myself wants from a game while sprucing it up with some modern stuff that doesn’t detract from the core gaming experience. I get that the original mode content is available on PSP or iOS but its the vast number of Chronicle mode levels that keeps bringing me back to it over time – not to mention a sweet cabinet design that annihilates anything you could expect to get out of a tiny handheld device. Come to think of it, I will do DBAC for the next 1 Credit Play Monday, so stay tuned.

Getting An Arcade Cabinet Into a Basement – Here is a great DIY method to getting an arcade cabinet into a basement. It looks much easier than having to navigate a flight of narrow stairs!

Name That Game #52b – Well, no luck last week – I didn’t see any guesses! Sorry for going so obscure although I really thought that the first two games would be somewhat well-known. So because I’m feeling a little lazy, I’ll give them another chance, I know you guys can figure them out!

I’ll have to pass on that idea to the library in my area. Doubtful I’d have luck with it, but I guess it’s worth a shot.

It’s a cool idea having arcade machines in a library but of but the problem is it may not attract kids as much since most will turn to games that are popular right now that they are currently growing up with and will more likely go on the computers in the library if they have any. But if they are games that can’t be played on the computer like a racing game then it would make a difference.
