Automated RFID-enabled wristbands for the arcade

Hot on the tails of our news a little over a week ago that vendors are looking into alternate payment methods for the amusement industry comes this announcement of a partnership between Precision Dynamics Corp. and Ideal Software to create a new automated e-payment system for arcades, thus pushing the envelope of coinless arcades in the market.

The new system will use a combination of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) wristbands and specialized software that will allow operators to upload credits to the wristband, which the player will simply have to wave in front of a scanner on the arcade machine itself to credit the game. It’s also theoretical that the wristbands could be used for other purposes, such as easy re-admittance or maybe competitions (the software would have to support something like this but it shouldn’t be impossible to implement). It is unclear how much it would cost an arcade to move over to this new system, but if it proves reliable and affordable this could be the wave of the future for arcades.
