I’m back from CAX (click here to watch a tour – I will likely do a post about the event here soon) and that means its time to catch up on a little news about a new arcade game called ZOMBEEZ. Read on.
ZOMBEEZ: A Killer Queen Remix
BumbleBear Games, creators of the indie hit Killer Queen Arcade, is back with their third arcade piece, this one following Black Emperor. As a quick note, both of those games were at CAX 2024. The game we’re looking at here however, hasn’t been released yet, but it is available for pre-order. I am not sure if any distributors that sell BumbleBear titles have it listed yet (not that I’ve seen), but you can also pre-order through said distributor if you’d like even if they don’t have a listing.
Here’s the cabinet, which is a much smaller form factor than KQA is. According to the email I got about it, the cabinet features “gorgeous side art by Harry Bogosian, who also made the side art for Black Emperor. The cabinet features the same joystick and buttons as Killer Queen. We’ve also added a new 2-player mode to the game, and a number of arcade-specific features like local high-score boards and an attract mode.” These arcade additions are mentioned as the game was originally created for PC.
I’m guessing that the 2-player mode is alternating play, since there’s only one set of controls. It also has a 23″ HD monitor.
Pre-orders are mentioned as being for a “limited edition”, with the orders closing on August 31st, 2024 and the cabinet shipping out approximately nine months from now (April/May 2025). Pre-order pricing is $5,995 plus freight/tax.
ZOMBEEZ Gameplay
If this feels like it came out of nowhere, I would say: “Not quite”. We did have two stories on it back in 2021… but three years out-of-sight & mind, I almost forgot about it too.
This game is a spin-off to KQA, still being a platformer, but now the running and jumping has scrolling AND there are boss fights. Here’s a spiel the web page, then the trailer:
Built directly on top of the Killer Queen engine, ZOMBEEZ: A Killer Queen Remix brings the Killer Queen experience to an entirely new genre, full of never-before-seen enemies and challenges. You’ll run, fly, and slay your way through the undead horde as you head towards a final showdown with the infamous Blood Queen!
Over the years, we at BumbleBear Games have striven to be the vanguards of the modern arcade. We’ve put hundreds of Killer Queen machines into arcades, bars, and rec rooms across the country, with millions of games played. Our games are all about physically bringing people together, face to face. So when Covid started sweeping across the globe, the arcade scene was heavily impacted by the closing of bars and arcades. This left both our company and the Killer Queen community in a rough spot, so we created something that would help bring us and our players closer together. The end result is a game we love, proving that adversity is a great catalyst for creativity.
Have you played this game on PC? If so, how do you think it will be playing it on an arcade cabinet? Would you order Zombeez: A Killer Queen Remix for your location?
I was excited about this release until I found out it was on Steam and not arcade exclusive.
