While indie developed arcade games have reduced in numbers since 2020, they haven’t gone away, and today we’re excited to share that a new title called Speglar, which has been available for venues to grab since last year. Let’s see what this one is about.
Speglar – The Game
Speglar is a fast action single-screen video game, designed by Dexter Gramfor in GODOT engine that started out just for arcades, then it was made available for Steam. To be fair, it was released in May of 2024, but we just found out about it this week. Better late than never, but best on time. Here’s a description of the game from the press kit:
In the intergalactic sport of Speglar, pilots ricochet bullets using mirrors scattered throughout the arena to take out their opponents in chaotic yet competitive matches. When cornered, deploy your shield to reflect your enemies’ bullets right back at them. Sit back and enjoy frantic and fun casual games, or deep-dive into the mechanics and become a true Speglar master.
There are four game modes: Free-For-All, 2v2, Mayhem, and Waves, provding players with a variety of ways to enjoy the game’s design – which sort of reminds me of Exidy’s TARG and SPECTAR, enhanced with today’s tech.
Speglar – The Cabinet
The Speglar cabinet is a tall cocktail cabinet that supports four players. The controls are simple with two action buttons plus a joystick. Also, it’s always easier to enjoy a round on a multiplayer game like this in the arcade format – multiplayer games around a PC are usually awkward being at a computer desk, unless you’ve got it connected to your TV.
The hardware is designed and sold by Mark Kleeb of the Wonderville arcade in New York, using Sanwa JLF joysticks and Industrias Lorenzo buttons, controlled using an IPAC-2 I/O board. Updates are available through an online connection. It does have an operator menu “…for adjusting coins per credit, audio (main/sfx/music/toggle sound on/off in attract mode), game start countdown length, and toggle free play on/off.” It’s available in coin-op or free play models and is listed as $6495 (plus freight). If you are interested in one, you can send an email to contact@speglargame.com but note that there is approximately a 4 month lead time on them.
