Namco’s New Dark Escape 3D on Location Test in Japan

UPDATE: We have the first look at the US version of the game here.

Later this year Namco has a new horror-themed light-gun shooter on its way to arcades, similar to Deadstorm Pirates but with some twists of its own. We have covered it to some degree already but Namco has been fairly secretive about it until now where in Japan they have put the game up on location test. I am fairly certain that this will also be making its way over West so perhaps a location test will be held somewhere soon. As it is we know for sure that this will be released this July in Japan, To be Announced for everywhere else. I also wonder if they will be doing different cabinet versions like has been done for Deadstorm Pirates.

Japanese website Small Room Aries has a review of the location test version of the game with pictures. It still isn’t clear to me how the heartbeat sensor will be working as a part of the game thanks to the confusing translation, although I wonder if it might affect the outcome of the game itself, much like your sanity level in Eternal Darkness. That would be an interesting use of the sensor but we will have to wait and see.

As for things that are clear, the game can be watched in either 2D or stereoscopic 3D. The 3D glasses are anti-bacterial and large enough to cover a pair of glasses the player might be wearing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 3D effect itself is solid much like I saw with Deadstorm Pirates 3D at IAAPA, which was one of the better 3D effects I’ve seen in a game so far. There are wind-blowing air effects which will certainly be used to startle the player.  There are five selectable stages, but only three were available in the loctest version here, a Prison, Execution Ground and a Cottage. And of course, there will be zombies but fortunately some other types of horror-esque creatures as well.
