Your first look at Sega’s Operation GHOST, sequel to Ghost Squad

We weren’t exactly sure what kind of game Sega’s new Operation GHOST was going to be, based solely on the teaser site but with the first pictures of the beta game cabinet now out on the internet, our guess of a Ghost Squad sequel was right on the money. The guns have three functions to them, a trigger, grenade button and a switch on the side. They also appear to have a special kind of scope on the top but it’s not clear yet if that function is of a Silent Scope nature or if it’s something more simple. Perhaps the side switch is related to the scope. If you expand the picture to the right here, you will see that the GHOST abbreviation is the same used in Ghost Squad and you can get a closer look at the guns. We also don’t know if this is a Ringwide or Ringedge game (so far Ringwide has been used on Sega’s international arcade releases and Ringedge has been for Japanese ones) but hopefully these and other questions surrounding the game will be answered soon. I’m 99.999% sure this will see a US and Europe release considering how popular the first Ghost Squad was in these territories, it’s really just a question of ‘when’ instead of ‘if’. Also it’s worth noting that this is a beta cabinet – especially in the case of Sega’s gun games they often have several different designs depending upon the territory they release the game in. I lost track of how many times they changed the Rambo cabinet and even the Ghost Squad cabinet had a couple of different renditions.

Also, Small Room Aries has some impressions on the game. The location test version has two missions to play through (no worries, loctest games always have fewer levels to play from the final release) and it sounds like you shoot off-screen to reload. There is also a critical combo system in place for combining headshots. Read the impressions @ Small Room Aries.

I am assuming that this is just a test cabinet they had lying around or that it is not completely built up with all the fixings.

Its a white wood cabinet – the game uses a special feature that needs a unique cabinet design – so this is a early Beta.

I wonder what sort of feature it is that will hopefully make the game more fresh?

heads-up target on weapon (AR), player vs player battle, network cabinet, ALL.Net stats, slow mo gun blast…. thats just my guess 😉

I like the look of the cabinet but it does look plain though and could use some more artwork applying on the cabinet. I bet it gets released late 2011 like most arcade games are. I didn’t think I’d hear of any arcade games for a while after the tsunami, how are arcades in japan doing? Since they have to reserve power and also the slight lack of food I would’ve thought it would hurt arcades especially

They probably had the game pretty much ready to go when the quake struck and that pushed testing back some time. Perhaps they are just focusing on areas that have seen limited impact from the disaster for sales.

I wonder if this game will have a card system like GHOST Squad or even an internet ranking for that matter.
