UPDATE: My review of this has now been posted.
It’s been a little while since we heard about the crowdsourced documentary film, 100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience. If you need a refresher, the trailer is below, showing how it dives into the culture of arcades in Japan while also covering three genres, shooters, fighters and rhythm games. They interviewed a number of people in different countries from professionals involved in the business to the gamers both casual and hardcore. They also visited various locations in Japan, the US and Canada, which also included getting around restrictions on arcades that prohibit filming. It took the makers three years of filming and production to get it ready but as of today the film is available on DVD for purchase. It’s $25 for the disc, which is region-free, 68 minutes long and has subtitles in English, Japanese, French and Spanish. There are two other releases planned for it including a digital and Blu-Ray release in Q4 of this year. The release is being handled by FilmBuff, and you can purchase it here.
Stay tuned, perhaps we’ll have a review of it before too long 😉
I’ve been waiting for this documentary, can’t wait to watch it.
