A battle for fortune & glory is underway, as the second annual Major League eSports World Championship is now happening in Utah. Let’s see what it’s all about:
What Is MLeS & The Championship?
MLeS is a free app designed by Alan-1 that sort of works like Stern Pinball’s Insider Connected, but for video games. As of this writing, there are two games that are a part of that (Avian Knights and Asteroids Recharged Arcade), but that
is going to be expanding very soon.
The app is free, and it makes it easy to track your scores on a game, earn achievements, play in tournaments, and it even tells you when someone has beaten one of your scores. It will soon have a game location finder too. It was part of the reason that Asteroids Recharged won 1st place in the IAAPA Brass Ring Award in Games & Devices last year, as it was designed to get people to go – and keep going back – to the arcade.
Another thing that it tracks are League Points. These are earned by participating in any posted tournament during an MLeS season, which lasts from Jan 1st – Dec. 31st each year.
For the World Championships, participants are chosen from the top 8 MLeS players, determined by their total League Points earned during the previous season (Jan 1st.-Dec. 31st of the prior year). In last year’s tournament, they didn’t have an arcade game yet, so this was done by playing Avian Knights on the Atari VCS. Now, that has expanded with both of the aforementioned arcade games.

Up for grabs are thousands of dollars worth of cash prizes. Eight participants are playing across the two games, and they are playing the arcade versions, not any console version. Last year, Retroman21 had come away the victor… he’s back this year to defend his title. But it could always go in a new direction.
The winners should be decided by 6PM MST (1 hour ahead of Pacific time). I hope to get out there briefly, but Saturday obligations are making it a challenge.
There should also be a new Alan-1 game announced at the tournament, sometime later this afternoon. I’ll update once that has been revealed. 🙂
