While licenses are nothing new in the industry, one that has been extremely popular among a variety of manufacturers has been The Wizard of Oz. It’s been used for pinball and coin pushers, and now it is coming to the video redemption space with a new game from Raw Thrills. Let’s take a look.
Wizard Of Oz Goes Videmption
This isn’t a complete surprise, as we heard that this game was testing out as far back as September of last year – although it was odd for the game to not make an appearance at recent trade shows like IAAPA and EAG. It will be at Amusement Expo 2025 however, in case you will be there and are interested in getting some hands-on time with it.
The game itself should look a little familiar, in that it uses a similar set up & form factor to ICE’s Monopoly Roll-N-Go: two vertically-oriented screens are stacked on top of each other, controlled by spinning a giant orb. Aside from the license difference though, this also does something else that Raw Thrills has become known for: it vends cards. As you can see from this sales sheet, there are several cards (the image highlights six, but there are eight total) that you can collect, earning a bonus from collecting the whole set:
The gameplay is deeper than just a basic “spin ‘n win” type deal. There’s one spin per credit; then there are five colors that the pointers can land on (in addition to other blocks like the Rainbow Bonus), with four blocks to each color. If a color is landed on, it gets “checked,” and the player wins a certain number of tickets that are shown on the screen. This then levels up the “color,” thus increasing the values. You’ll win tickets with every spin, but you will not win a card every time. On top of that, there is a “Double Up” button feature. The first time that you swipe, the game will ask if you want to “double up;” if yes, you have to swipe again. Then, all posted numbers (including the Rainbow Bonus) gets doubled. Redeeming card value does NOT change though. This image shows how the colors being checked can work, and why you want to get them all checked for that more lucrative bonus:
Checked boxes are retained from play-to-play, until someone lands on the Rainbow Bonus marker. Once that is done, all of the checks are reset.
The only way to get a card is to land on the “Free Card” space, which gives a card plus tickets. Cards can be kept and collected, or you can turn the card into the venue in exchange for tickets (just like Andamiro USA and their particular card games). This also means that cards are recyclable, unlike Minecraft or Injustice Arcade.
While there are only eight cards, there are rarities, the Toto card being the rarest. There are four cards with a cyan back (more common) and purple (less common/rare). The image above only shows the fronts of the cards, although in the materials I read, they are made of out of a kind of plastic blend, so they will hold up better than paper-based cards.
One other thing to note is that the game has been seen out there, with one of our readers sharing an image of the game at a Round1USA location. It’s earnings are almost twice as high as Nerf Arcade and Space Invaders Frenzy, so just from the testing it’s certainly shaping up to be a major hit. From what I’ve been told however, the game will likely be widely available by May, although interested buyers can place their orders right now. Per the press release below, the company considers it to be released.
You can also read up some about it on Raw Thrills’ website, where they’ve launched an official page for it; this includes goodies like screenshots.
What are your thoughts on this one? Let us know in the comments! I imagine that putting it in between Elaut’s Wizard of Oz pusher and a Jersey Jack Pinball WOZ would make for quite the WOZ fan showcase.
