One of the biggest arcade surprises of the year was the announcement of Halo: Fireteam Raven. While the Super Deluxe model of the game has been out there this summer, the game continues to grab attention. Today we have a video that is almost 10 minutes long that takes us behind-the-scenes to see how this game came into being. This reminds me of how Stern has constantly created “The Making Of…” videos for their titles; it’s been unfortunate that we haven’t really seen this on the video arcade side, but better late than never.
It’s an excellent video that gets into all of the game development process on the arcade side, showing viewers that other new games are also around and what goes into the process. They had to recreate all of the effects from scratch; there is also footage showing the work that goes into constructing these titans. They also throw out the tease that there’s a Halo pinball design somewhere out there…
343 Industries also has this nice page that details the game in a way to appeal to players, but I think also helps market it to potential cabinet buyers. Still, for the latter, I think we’ll need to see a smaller version. Perhaps we’ll see such a thing at IAAPA 2018.
I like the animation quality. It’s the right step for arcade’s future. They made a statement with that monster, and should go back small ball now (single screen, two guns). The video is a commercial made for customers, not a developers diary. I’m always skeptical when people offer “Making Of’s”, because it’s usually far away from reality.
