In March of 2008, we found out about a new arcade fighter called Dark Presence that was in development by an indie dev studio known as Galloping Ghost. We have followed the progress of this game since then and it’s been a little while since there was anything new to report until today where the developer re-launched their website and has provided more screenshots of this game, which is quite different from other fighters out there today since they have taken painstaking efforts to digitize actors into the game, much like what we saw back in the 90’s but with 1000’s of more frames and in high definition (some extra details on what this game has can be found here). We’re still waiting to see how this game looks in motion as well as how it plays but GG is promising some in-game footage soon and when the game is about ready to go they will go on a tour around the US, showcasing the game at different arcades so people can get a hand on it before release.

In addition to the new site, Galloping Ghost is launching an effort called “Support Your Local Arcades”, where the goal is to do their part to help revitalize the industry. They actuallygalloping_ghost_supports arcades have worked hard to list all the arcades in their area onto Aurcade.com (one of the sites you can use to find an arcade near you) and the staff at GG have gone out of their way to help their local arcades where possible, which is pretty cool of them to do in my view. They actually plan on expanding this idea into something larger that more people can become involved with, so we will let you know when that happens.

If you are like me and you enjoy delving into stories of what creating arcade games is like, then this interview is for you. Coinopspace has posted a raw transcript of an interview they did with ex-Atari employee, Russel ‘Rusty’ Dawes. Rusty worked on a slew of Atari arcade titles over his ten year stay with the company, including titles like I, Robot, Cloak & Dagger, Paperboy, Rampart and more. He discusses those games as well as some that never made it to the light of day, easter eggs that can be found in a few games and more. It’s fairly long but full of fascinating information that is worth reading. Hit the link below for the full thing.

The makers of coin-op games like Oriental Legend 2, Pirate Revenge, Speed Driver 2 and Battle Stations is teaming up with Sega to develop arcade machiens specifically for the Chinese market. All of those aforementioned titles were made primairly for that particular market, with a few of their games making it to other territories with English translations (as is the case with Speed Driver 2 and Battle Stations), but this is an interesting development as Sega gets a foot into the Chinese market and IGS gets to use better hardware than what they typically use. According to the announcement, IGS will “design a Chinese-language Sega machine with localized features”. Shipments begin in the 3rd quarter of this year, so we’ll keep our eyes open for more developments on this front.

Screens from Taito’s online racer Top Speed look snazzy

Taito has published some screenshots from their upcoming online coin-op racing title Top Speed and overall I’d have to say that so far they look pretty good, and it will be even better if the game runs at a solid 60 fps. Between the nice graphics and the online features Top Speed is shaping up to be a solid contender in the crowded racer arena but it still remains to be seen how the game plays.  As you might recall, Top Speed allows for players to race against others over the internet who are playing the game in other arcades and it even includes a built-in chat feature. Click on the thumbs below for a better view.

The Museum of Soviet Arcade machines

A long while back, I recall a story showing up on the blogs where someone had come across several arcade games that had been made in the Soviet Union back in the late 70’s/early 80’s. As these were developed behind the Iron Curtain, knowledge about these titles didn’t spread very far but it’s interesting to see how the explosive growth of arcade gaming at the time affected even the USSR. From the looks of it the graphical capabilities of these machines seem to be on par with some early Atari 2600 games and the games themselves seemed to borrow from elements found in many western games although they did not seem to many produce bootlegs of titles that we all know so well, except for one title that looks a lot like Midway’s Sea Raider (1969). Apparently these games were made in secret military factories and have mostly been forgotten even in Russia but one group is collecting and restoring the machines, where you can know see them via the online Musuem of Soviet Arcade machines. You can even play the games in Flash on the site in case you are curious to see how they play. For more, visit the links below.

If Danger Zone were made today

If we take a trip on the wayback machine to 1986, the industry crash has begun to pass and while it hurt arcades, companies were still churning out a lot of games and sometimes those games broke new ground either via controls, gameplay or graphics. Cinematronics created such a game known as Danger Zone, which featured it’s monitor on a swivel where the image in-game was tracked with the movement of the monitor. Many have since forgot about this game but with a video that just popped up on youtube where a guy modified some model gun with an LCD monitor and a tracking unit so it would serve as a type of mouse controller for use on the PC. This also reminds me of the concept used in Namco’s Gunmen Wars which featured a kind of motion-tracked gun, although what you’ll see in the video below allows for greater movement around the room.

The upcoming 2D fighter Demon Bride is starting to ramp up the hype machine in Japan, which will include a tour of the game around the country through various cities next month. With the tour they will also be holding a number of tournaments where some cool “limited edition” prizes will be given away, perhaps models of different game characters that seem to be popular. Here is a video that was recently posted to the Demon Bride site that has to do with hyping the game up and while it’s all in Japanese at least you can see more of this game in action.

MoCap Sports makes another public appearance with more features

Konami’s return to the motion capture arena is back in Japanese arcades again, testing out the concept to see how players take to it in a post-Wii Sports world. Last time we saw Mocap Sports it only featured a baseball game but this time they have added boxing and tennis to what it can do and they have also removed a net that was in place last time. This still looks like a good mood to me – while Konami had tried mocap games a few years before the Wii came along, the Wii showed that with a game like Wii Sports people will soak that up like a sponge. We’ll have to see how the experience Konami offers compares to Nintendo’s fare but it’s not like they have to try very hard to do that as long as they can get people to play.

According to a Capcom Japanese Q & A Blog, some hints were dropped that could mean theres a sequel on the cards to the popular arcade and console beat-em up.

Check out the translation of the Q&A over at Shoryuken Forums

When you think about it, it’s hardly surprising. Street Fight IV Turbo? Super Street Fighter IV? or Street Fighter IV Championship Edition if the translation proves correct. What ever it’s name might be, my main question is; will we see an arcade version of this, possibly as a kit? Lets hope so.

SEGA and Namco sign up to EAG Expo

This story took me by surprise, although when I look back to this post about the re-shuffling of ATEI 2010, it makes sense.

By the looks of it, there could be a complete switch to the ExCel based show by most of the major companies. With Sega and Namco on board, it makes it pretty hard to ignore this new show in my opinio. Also with the likes of Crown Direct, Electrocoin, Harry Levy and MDM signed up it begs the question of what will be left of ATEI?

Hopefully the organisers BACTA aren’t going get strict on who can attend the show. Head over to Inter Gaming Online to hear what some of the newly signed up companies have to say about this new and exciting show!
