The IAAPA 2013 trade show is approaching fast and with it, expect a number of news items to pop-up this week. For the first, we have known about a new Plants Vs. Zombies arcade/redemption game coming to the event and now we have a look at the cabinet as seen on Sega Amusements’ Facebook page:
As we can tell from this, it will not be just a port of the game as known around the world, as this is a first-person light-gun game instead of an overhead strategy title. It’s unknown if there is an option built into the game to turn off the ticket redemption part but either way I imagine this is one title that will not be hard to find out in the wild.
We will have more coverage of this next week thanks to The Stinger Report who will be feeding me info. Unfortunately I will not be able to personally attend the show this year as I had been planning to (just my luck when this is shaping up to be the biggest IAAPA show since I started covering the amusement sector) so no personal insights on the games. But I will gather as many personal thoughts, pictures and video about what is there as possible.
wow, a light gun game, i’m actually interested now… though i was kinda interested in seeing if the tower defense paradigm worked in the arcades…
I imagined it being a bootleg just like a Chinese company did once at a Chinese trade show a couple years back, looks fun maybe 🙂
As much as I like to see new controls for things, I think in this particular instance changing it up so that the game instead of the controls is a bit different from what players are used to will prove to Sega’s benefit here.
Tower defense does work in arcade games I think. Microsoft used to have a giant coffee table sized Surface device at their store that cost $10,000. I played a “defend earth from aliens” tower defense game with my girlfriend at the time and it was great.
Agreed: https://arcadeheroes.com/2009/12/17/missing-in-action-on-the-defense-tower-defense-and-otherwise/
Although to a degree I think Sega is playing it smart here by changing some of the game up. That way it won’t suffer from “oh I have that game on my PC/tablet, but this is just a bigger screen).
Finally a legit PvZ arcade game… As a light-gun zombie-smashing shooter.
